Jung Jae-il (Korean:정재일,Korean pronunciation:[tɕʌŋtɕɛil]; born 7 May 1982) is a South Koreancomposer. He notably composed the score of critically acclaimed works: the 2019Academy Award-winning filmParasite, directed byBong Joon-ho,[2] and the television seriesSquid Game, which he earned a nomination forOutstanding Original Main Title Theme Music in74th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

Biography

He was three when he first sat on a piano, played the guitar at nine, and at age 13, he posted an ad on a music magazine calledHot Music[3] "to find bass drums and vocals to do a style of music that is similar to the British heavy metalbandCarcass."[4] He graduated fromSeoul Jazz Academy [ko].[1]

He debuted as the bassist of the band gigs (whichJung Won-yong [ko], vocalistLee Juck and guitaristHan Sang-won [ko] were also part of) in November 1999.[5][6] He released his first solo album "tear flower(눈물꽃)" in 2003.[4] He also was a member of band Puri in their second album in 2007.[7][8]

He went to serve the military when he was at the age of 30 (around 2012 or 2013).[3] He played the piano at theApril 2018 inter-Korean summit.[9]

In 2021, he won theHollywood Music in Media Awards for Best Score in a TV Show forSquid Game.[10]
