TheJunee Shire is alocal government area in theRiverina region ofNew South Wales,Australia. The Shire comprises an area of 2,030 square kilometres (780 sq mi)[6] and is located adjacent to theOlympic Highway and theMain South railway line. It was formed on 1 January 1981 from the amalgamation of theMunicipality of Junee andIllabo Shire resulting from theLocal Government Areas Amalgamation Act 1980.[3]

The Shire includes the town ofJunee and the small towns ofBethungra,Illabo,Wantabadgery,Harefield,Old Junee,Junee Reefs,Dirnaseer andEurongilly.

Themayor of Junee Shire isCr. Neil Smith, anindependent politician.[7]

Current composition and election method

Junee Shire Council is composed of ninecouncillors electedproportionally as a singleward. All councillors are elected for a fixed four-year term of office. The mayor is usually elected by the councillors each September. The most recent council election was held on 4 December 2021, having been delayed from 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the makeup of the council is as follows:
