Jumièges (French pronunciation:[ʒymjɛʒ]) is acommune in theSeine-Maritimedepartment in theNormandy region in north-westernFrance.

Geography

Aforestry andfarming village situated in ameander of the riverSeine, some 21 kilometres (13 mi) west ofRouen, at the junction of the D 65 and the D 143 roads. Aferry service operates here, connecting the commune with the south and west sides of the river.

Jumièges Abbey

It is best known as the site ofJumièges Abbey, a typicalNormanabbey of theRomanesque period, and the home of the pro-NormanchroniclerWilliam of Jumièges who wrote theGesta Normannorum Ducum about 1070. Ruined in the first quarter of the 19th century, the abbey dates from the 7th century.[6] The church of Notre Dame was consecrated in 1067 in the presence ofWilliam the Conqueror.[8]
