Julian Carroll Spence (May 5, 1929 – March 6, 1990) was anAmerican footballdefensive back who played two seasons with theHouston Oilers of theAmerican Football League (AFL). He playedcollege football atSam Houston State University and attendedL. C. Anderson High School inAustin, Texas. He was also a member of theChicago Cardinals andSan Francisco 49ers of theNational Football League (NFL).[1]
Spence played in eight games for theChicago Cardinals in1956,[1] and three games forSan Francisco 49ers during the1957.[1] He then left football before returning to play for theAmerican Football LeagueHouston Oilers from 1960 to 1961, where he played on the championship team both years. In the1961 AFL Championship Game against theSan Diego Chargers, a late-game interception by Spence secured a 10-3 victory for the Oilers, earning the team their second AFL championship in as many years.[2]
Spence served in theUnited States Army, earning the rank offirst lieutenant. He died at his home inHarris County, Texas, on March 6, 1990, after an undisclosed illness.[3]
