Julian Richards (born 31 July 1968) is a Welsh film director. He is associated with theCool Cymru era of culture and arts in Wales.

Early life

Julian Richards was born inNewport, South Wales, where his father owned DIY retail storeHandiland. Inspired by his uncleRex Richards Hollywood acting career, Julian decided to become a film director and produced several short films on super 8 mm includingThe Curse of Cormac,Gang War,Evil Inspirations andThe Girl That Cried Wolf which was broadcast by theBBC in the "16 and Up Video Showcase".

In Newport, Julian attended St Julian's Comprehensive School and Gwent College of Higher Education where he studied Art & Design Foundation. In 1985 he attended the film school atBournemouth and Poole College of Art where he directed two Super 8 mm shorts "Time" and "Infanticide" and two 16 mm shortsPirates andQueen Sacrifice.Pirates won The Starting Out Award at theCeltic Media Festival 1988 andQueen Sacrifice won the Thames Television Award for Best Fiction Film at the BP Expo–British Short Film Festival 1990 before being broadcast onScreenplay Firsts.

In 1988, Richards attended theNational Film and Television School inBeaconsfield, where he was invited to directIn with the Rent forBBC Wales andA Week in the Life a documentary about a cattle drover forS4C. In 1992, Richards graduated theNFTS with the 16 mm shortBad Company, broadcast onITV Wales and selected to screen atAFI Fest in Los Angeles.

In 1992, Richards moved to Los Angeles where he worked for Shapiro Glickenhaus Entertainment directing an EPK forSlaughter of the Innocents starringScott Glenn and adaptedChris Westwood's novelCalling All Monsters forSteven Spielberg'sAmblin Entertainment atUniversal Studios. In 1994 he returned to the UK to directA Mutter of Voices forBBC2 and twelve episodes of theChannel 4 soapBrookside, including the body under the patio episodes.

In 1996, he wrote and directed his debut feature filmDarklands, a brooding tale of underground paganism starringJon Finch,Craig Fairbrass andRowena King. A festival favourite winning several awards including theMéliès d'Argent for Best European Fantasy Film 1997,Darklands was picked up for distribution byPathé. The film forms part of the cultural era in Wales identified asCool Cymru. Richards followed up withSilent Cry starringEmily Woof,Douglas Henshall,Frank Finlay,Kevin Whately,Clive Russell andCraig Kelly, an urban thriller which received its UK premiere onChannel 5.

In 2003, Richards expanded into film production, establishing Prolific Films through which he produced and directed the micro-budget shockerThe Last Horror Movie which won sixteen awards including Best UK Feature atRaindance Film Festival and theMéliès d'Argent for Best European Fantasy Film 2005. This video diary of a serial killer was theatrically released in the US byFangoria and in the UK byTartan Films.

In 2006 Richards produced and directed coming-of-age thrillerSummer Scars which won twoBAFTA Cymru awards and was nominated for Best Film.Summer Scars was released in North America byTLA Releasing and in the UK bySoda Pictures. In 2008, Richards directedCharles Dickens's England featuring SirDerek Jacobi, a documentary about the life of the 19th century author, which received a theatrical release in the UK by Guerilla Films before being broadcast bySky Television. In 2011 Richards directedShiver, a psychological horror starringDanielle Harris,John Jarratt,Casper Van Dien andRae Dawn Chong, which was released in North America byImage Entertainment.In 2018 Richards directed Daddy's Girl,[1] a psychological horror starringCostas Mandylor andJemma Dallender which was released in North America byCleopatra Entertainment and Reborn,[2] a paranormal horror starringBarbara Crampton,Michael Pare, Kayleigh Gilbert,Rae Dawn Chong,Chaz Bono,Monte Markham andPeter Bogdanovich which was released in North America byVertical Entertainment. In 2019, Richards wrote and directed Bad Santa, a five-minute episode in the Christmas themed horror anthologyDeathcember[3] which was released in North America byScream Factory.
