Julian Medical Building, also known asOwl Drug Store Building, is a historic two-story building at 6384 W.Hollywood Boulevard, on the corner of Hollywood andCahuenga Boulevard, inHollywood, California.
Julian Medical Building was built on the site of Hollywood's former civic center, which was redeveloped in 1933.[1] The building was financed by theBeveridge family[2] and designed byMorgan, Walls & Clements, the architectural firm responsible for manyLos Angeles landmarks, including theDominguez–Wilshire Building,Adamson House,Chapman Plaza, and theEl Capitan,Music Box,Wiltern,Mayan, andBelasco theaters.[3] This building, which features a combination ofArt Deco andStreamline Moderne styles, was built in 1934.[4]
Upon opening, the ground floor tenant wasOwl Drug, giving the building the alternate name Owl Drug Store Building. The second floor contained medical offices.[5]
In 1984, theHollywood Boulevard Commercial and Entertainment District was added to theNational Register of Historic Places, with Julian Medical Building listed as acontributing property in the district.[4]
Julian Medical Building has been described as a "landmark",[4] "an architectural masterpiece",[6] and "one of the crowning achievements ofStreamline Moderne."[7] The building's distinctive features include a roundedModerne corner, windswept tower, and pylon-separated horizontally-reinforced windows.[4][8]
Cahuenga Building inDisney California Adventure Park’sHollywood Land and Keystone Clothiers inDisney’s Hollywood Studios are modeled after the Julian Medical Building.[6][9]
