Julia Buckley is a BritishLabour Party politician who has served as Member of Parliament forShrewsbury since2024.[1]

Early political career

Buckley worked in theEuropean Parliament for 5 years as a policy advisor, and went on to work as an EU funding specialist in regional and local government including atWolverhampton City Council. In the2019 European Parliament election in the United Kingdom, she was a candidate placed third on theWest Midlands party list.[2]

She was elected as Councillor for theBridgnorth West and Tasley Division inShropshire Council in the2021 United Kingdom local elections, having previously contested Bridgnorth East and Astley Abbotts in2017.[3][4][5] She was also elected as Councillor for the Bridgnorth Town East Ward in Bridgnorth Town Council in 2017.[6][7] She became leader of the Shropshire Labour Group in 2022, in opposition on theShropshire Council.[8]

She is affiliated to theUnison trade union.[3]

Parliamentary career

Buckley was inspired by her friendJo Cox to run for parliament which she did in the2024 United Kingdom general election.[9] Buckley is the first woman to represent the town of Shrewsbury as an MP, as well as the first Labour Party MP for the constituency of Shrewsbury, which was re-established in 2024.[10] She previously contested its predecessor seat,Shrewsbury and Atcham, in the2019 general election, coming second place to its incumbentConservative MP,Daniel Kawczynski.[11]

She is a member on theEnvironmental Audit Select Committee[12] and is the Chair of theAPPG on Local Markets.[13]

In November 2024, Buckley voted in favour of theTerminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, which proposes to legaliseassisted suicide.[14]
