Judinornis is a genus of prehistoricflightless birds from the lateCretaceous period. The single knownspecies isJudinornis nogontsavensis. Itsfossils have been found inNemegt Formation rocks of southernMongolia, and though the age of these deposits is not fully resolved,Judinornis probably lived some 70 million years ago during the earlyMaastrichtian.
The Nemegt Formation does not seem to containmarine sediments. Consequently, and unlike its relatives, this was apparently a bird ofestuaries and rivers running from the mountains thrown up by theCimmerian orogeny through the arid lands of continentalEast Asia towards theTurgai Sea and the former Shigatze Ocean.[citation needed]
Judinornis was a member of theHesperornithes, flightless toothed seabirds of theCretaceous. Though its relationships to other members of this group are inadequately known, it appears to have been one of the morebasal hesperornithines.[1]
