Judith Lynne Brown Clarke (néeBrown , formerlyBrown-King , born July 14, 1961) is an American politician and formerathlete who competed mainly in the400 metre hurdles . She is the 1984 Olympic silver medalist and two-timePan American Games champion. She later was a member of theLansing, Michigan City Council.
Born inMilwaukee, Wisconsin , Clarke (under the name Judi Brown) won the gold medal in the 400m hurdles at the1983 Pan American Games , narrowly ahead of her team-mateSharrieffa Barksdale . In 1984, she won her first US national 400m hurdles title before going on to win the silver medal in the event at the1984 Summer Olympics inLos Angeles , finishing behindNawal El Moutawakel .[ 1] Under her then married name of Judi Brown King, she won three more US 400m hurdles titles from 1985 to 1987 and successfully defended herPan American Games title in 1987, finishing ahead ofSandra Farmer .[ 2] [ 3] She was also a twelve-timeBig Ten champion intrack and field events during her career. In 1987, she was selectedSportsman of the Year bySports Illustrated magazine for her community involvement.[ 4] [ 5]
Clarke holds two degrees fromMichigan State University , aBachelor's degree in Audiology and Speech Science, and aMaster's degree in Education. She was inducted into the Michigan State University Hall of Fame in 1986.[ 6] She holds aPh.D. in Public Administration and Public Policy fromWestern Michigan University , from which she graduated with honors.
Clarke was elected to theLansing, Michigan City Council in 2013 and remained in office until 2017, and unsuccessfully ran formayor of Lansing in the2017 election .[ 7] [ 8]
