Juan Manuel López (born 16 September 1983) is anArgentine politician, currently serving asNational Deputy since 2017. A member of theCivic Coalition ARI, López was first elected in2017 in theFederal Capital, and re-elected in2021 inBuenos Aires Province. He presides the Civic Coalition ARIparliamentary bloc within theJuntos por el Cambio group in the Chamber of Deputies.
López was born on 16 September 1983 inSaladillo, a small town in centralBuenos Aires Province. He finished high school at the Escuela Agrotécnica Selesiana Carlos M. Cásares in 2001, and then studied law at theUniversity of Buenos Aires, graduating in 2008.[1]
He served as a congressional advisor toElisa Carrió, the founder and leader of theCivic Coalition ARI.[2]
López ran for a seat in theArgentine Chamber of Deputies in the2017 legislative election; he was the fourth candidate in theVamos Juntos list in the City ofBuenos Aires. The list was the most voted, with 50.93% of the votes, and López was elected.[3][4] Upon the resignation of Elisa Carrió from the Chamber of Deputies in 2019, López became president of the Civic Coalitionbloc.[5]
As a national deputy, López formed part of the parliamentary commissions on Political Trials (of which he was appointed vice-president), Constitutional Affairs, Energy and Fuels, and Justice.[6] He was a supporter of the 2020Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy bill, whichlegalized abortion in Argentina. He was the only member of the Civic Coalition to vote in favour of the bill.[7]
In June 2021, he tested positive forCOVID-19.[8]
Ahead of the2021 primary election, López was confirmed as one of the candidates in the "Es Juntos" list inBuenos Aires Province.[9]
