Acentre-half, an older version of acentre-back, Bertone played forMontevideo Wanderers in his homeland,[1]Americano andComercial-SP in Brazil.[2]

International

Bertone represented theUruguay national team from 1906 to 1911, making twelve appearances and becoming theteam captain. He scored a goal in the 2–2 draw againstArgentina on 15 August 1908.[3][4][5]

Coaching career

Bertone led theChile national team in both the1920 and the1922 South American Championships. He was nicknamedMaestro (Master).[6][7][8]

Following Chile, he led the Chilean clubDeportivo Viña del Mar [es].[9]

Legacy

Club Social y De Deportes Juan Carlos Bertone fromVilla Alemana, Chile,[10][11] was founded in his honor on 9 February 1940 after his death in 1938.[12][13]
