Juan Carlos Gómez Díaz (born 6 April 1973), known asJuan Carlos, is a Spanish retiredfootballer who played as aforward. He was most recently themanager ofXerez CD.
Born inCórdoba,Andalusia, Carlos made his senior debut withCórdoba CF'sreserves in 1991. In 1993, after playing for the first team inSegunda División B, he moved to anotherreserve team in the same division,Atlético Madrid B.
After scoring a career-best twenty-one goals duringthe season, Carlos was loaned for one year in July 1994 toSegunda División sideCA Marbella. He made his debut in the category on 4 September of that year by starting in a 1–3 away loss againstHércules CF. He scored his first goal fourteen days later in a 4–1 away routing ofCD Badajoz.
After scoring eleven goals for Marbella, Carlos returned toAtleti in July 1995, and was subsequently assigned to thefirst team inLa Liga the following January. He made his top-tier debut on 6 January 1996, starting and scoring his team's first in a 3–1 home win againstCD Tenerife.
Mainly a backup toLyuboslav Penev andKiko during his spell, Carlos was featured sparingly before moving to fellow league teamReal Valladolid in 1997. In the following year, after struggling with injuries, he joinedSevilla FC in the second level.
Carlos was an ever-present figure for the club during his two-season stint,achieving top tier promotion as champions butsuffering immediate relegation. He spent the remainder of his career in the second level but impaired from his injuries; he represented Atlético Madrid,Getafe CF[1] andElche CF. He had trials with third level sideCD Villanueva,[2] but nothing came of them.
Carlos retired in 2007, aged 34, after playing forLucena CF inTercera División.[3]
Carlos began his managerial career in 2012 with the regional leagues of CD Ciudad Jardín. In February 2015, after more than a year without a club, he took overCD Mairena in the fourth level.[1]
On 17 July 2015, Carlos was appointed manager ofÉcija Balompié, also in the fourth division.[4]
In July 2019, he became the new manager ofXerez CD in theTercera División.[5]
After stints atVélez CF andCD Don Benito, he returned toXerez CD in October 2022.[6] On 26 February 2023, he was relieved of his duties.[7]
