Juárez is amunicipality in theMexicanstate ofMichoacán. The municipality has an area of 141.21 square kilometres (0.24% of the surface of the state)[1] and is bordered to the north by the municipality ofZitácuaro, to the east and southSusupuato, and to the west byTuzantla andJungapeo. The municipality had a population of 12, 016 inhabitants according to the 2005 census.[2] Its municipal seat is the city ofBenito Juárez.
It is unknown what ethnic group dominated the present day municipality of Juárez region inpre-Columbian times.[1]
The municipality is named afterBenito Juárez, aZapotecAmerindian who served five terms[3] (1858–1861), (1861–1865), (1865–1867), (1867–1871), and (1871–1872), asPresident of Mexico.
