TheJournal of the International Phonetic Association (JIPA;/ˈdʒaɪpə/)[1] is apeer-reviewedacademic journal that appears three times a year. It is published byCambridge University Press on behalf of theInternational Phonetic Association. It was established asDhi Fonètik Tîtcer ("The Phonetic Teacher") in 1886. In 1889, it was renamedLe Maître Phonétique and French was designated as the Association's official language.[2] It was written entirely in theIPA, with its name being written accordingly as "ləmɛːtrəfɔnetik" and hence abbreviated "mf", until 1971, when it obtained its current name and began to be written in theLatin script.[3][2] It covers topics inphonetics and applied phonetics such asspeech therapy andvoice recognition, as well as "Illustrations of the IPA" that describe individual languages using the IPA. The journal is abstracted and indexed in theMLA Bibliography.
