John Louis Loffredo (born May 7, 1953), known by thepen nameJoshua Sinclair, is an American writer, actor, filmmaker andphysician.[1]

Biography

Sinclair was bornJohn Louis Loffredo inNew York City. He initially planned to be amissionary, and began writing screenplays at the age of 14.[2]

Film career

In the early 1970s, he moved toRome, and made his film acting debut inVittorio De Sica'sThe Garden of the Finzi-Continis. He appeared in various films, notably several collaborations withEnzo G. Castellari andRoberto Rossellini. He was sometimes credited under the Italianized stage namesGianni Loffredo andGianluigi Loffredo.[3]

Later in the decade, he moved toAustria.[2][3]

In 1978, he wrote and produced the filmJust a Gigolo, starringDavid Bowie andMarlene Dietrich.[4] He contributed to the screenplay for Enzo G. Castellari's Spaghetti WesternKeoma (1976),[5][6]Casanova & Co. (1977), andJudgment in Berlin (1988); and wroteThe Golden Lady (1979).

In 1985, Sinclair published the historical novelShaka Zulu, based on the life of the19th-century Zulu King. The following year, the novel was adapted into aSABC miniseries of the same name.[2] In 2001, he wrote and directed a sequel telefilm,Shaka Zulu: The Citadel.

In 2018, he wrote and directed the filmA Rose in Winter, a biopic ofEdith Stein (Saint Teresa of the Cross).[7][8]

Medicine

In the 1980s, Sinclair left acting to pursue a career in medicine. He graduated from theUniversity of Virginia andJohns Hopkins University, as anM.D. with a specialization in tropical medicine. As a member ofMédecins Sans Frontières, he worked atGrant Medical College in India (where he worked withMother Teresa[8]) andChris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in South Africa.[2]
