Joseph Wendel (27 May 1901 – 31 December 1960) was a GermanCardinal of theRoman Catholic Church who served asArchbishop of Munich and Freising from 1952 until his death, and was elevated to thecardinalate in 1953 byPope Pius XII.

Biography

Joseph Wendel was born inBlieskastel, and studied at theseminary inSpeyer, and the Pontifical German-Hungarian College and thePontifical Gregorian University inRome. From the Gregorian he obtaineddoctorates inphilosophy andtheology. Wendel wasordained to thepriesthood on 30 October 1927, and then didpastoral work in Speyer, also serving as director ofCaritas, until 1941.

On 4 April 1941 he was appointedCoadjutor Bishop ofSpeyer andTitular Bishop ofLebessus. He received hisepiscopal consecration on the following 29 June from Bishop Ludwig Sebastian, with Bishops Matthias Ehrenfried and Joseph Kolb serving asco-consecrators. Wendel succeeded Sebastian asBishop of Speyer on 20 May 1943, being installed on 4 June that year. DuringWorld War II, he strongly defended the rights of the Church andhumanity.[1] Wendel became known as the "Bishop of Peace" following the war because of his efforts to restoreWest Germany's good will[2]

Pope Pius XII named himArchbishop of Munich and Freising on 9 August 1952 (three Bishops of Speyer have become Archbishop of Munich and Freising, the others beingMichael von Faulhaber andFriedrich Wetter), and created himCardinal Priest ofS. Maria Nuova in theconsistory of 12 January 1953. On 4 February 1956, Wendel became theApostolic Vicar of the CatholicMilitary Ordinariate of Germany. He was one of thecardinal electors in the1958 papal conclave, which selectedPope John XXIII. The German prelate also made gestures ofecumenism toProtestants,[3] and organized theInternational Eucharistic Congress inMunich in 1960.

Shortly after delivering his New Year's Eve sermon, Wendel died from aheart attack in Munich, at age 59.[2] He is buried in themetropolitancathedral of that city.
