Joseph Matthew Martin[1] (born 29 December 1962)[2] is a retired United States Armygeneral in theUnited States Army who served as the 37thVice Chief of Staff of the Army from 2019 to 2022. He previously served as the director of the Army Staff inWashington, D.C.[3][4]

Education

A native ofDearborn, Michigan and the son of aFord Motor Company executive, Martin graduated fromDearborn High School in 1981.[5] He graduated from theUnited States Military Academy at West Point in 1986.[1]

Martin earned a master's degree from theUniversity of Louisville, and graduated from theU.S. Army Command and General Staff College and theU.S. Army War College.[6]

Military career

After graduating theUnited States Military Academy, Martin served as a tank platoon leader, scout platoon leader, and company executive officer in the1st Battalion, 37th Armor Regiment, in the1st Armored Division (1987 to 1990). Upon graduation from theArmor Officer Advanced Course, he was assigned to4th Battalion, 37th Armor Regiment in the1st Infantry Division where he commanded Company B duringOperation Desert Storm and at Fort Riley, Kansas. Martin commanded the 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division from Fort Riley, Kansas, and deployed with that command to serve in northwest Baghdad, Iraq. Following brigade command, he became the chief of staff of III Corps in Fort Hood, Texas. From June 2012 to April 2013, Martin commanded the U.S. Army Operational Test Command.[7][8]

Martin was assigned at theNational Training Center and Fort Irwin in California as the Commanding General.[9] He participated inOperation Iraqi Freedom as the commander of 1st Battalion of the67th Armor Regiment in the4th Infantry Division. He was also the commander of the Combined Joint Forces Land Component CommandOperation Inherent Resolve inMosul in the fight against theIslamic State.[10][11][12][13][14]

Martin was the commanding general of the1st Infantry Division from September 2016 to May 2018.[15][16][17]

In May 2018, Martin was nominated for promotion tolieutenant general and an assignment as the Director of the Army Staff.[18][19][20] On 26 July 2019, he was assigned as the Army's 37th Vice Chief of Staff and promoted to general.[21]
