Joseph Arthur Costello (May 9, 1915 – September 22, 1978) was aRoman Catholic bishop of theCatholic Church in theUnited States who served as anauxiliary bishop of theArchdiocese of Newark ,New Jersey from 1963 to 1978.
Born inNewark, New Jersey , Joseph Costello was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Newark on June 7, 1941.
On November 17, 1962Pope John XXIII appointed Costello as theTitular Bishop of ‘’Choma ’’ and Auxiliary Bishop of Newark. He was consecrated a bishop by ArchbishopThomas Boland on January 24, 1963. The principal co-consecrators were BishopJames McNulty ofPaterson and Newark Auxiliary BishopMartin Stanton .
Costello attended three of the four sessions of theSecond Vatican Council (1962-1965). He continued to serve as an auxiliary bishop until his death at the age of 63 on September 22, 1978.[ 1] [ 2]
