Filipino archbishop and cardinal (born 1952)
José Lázaro Fuerte Advíncula Jr. OP (born March 30, 1952) is a Filipinoprelate of theCatholic Church and a professed member of theDominican Order , who became 33rdArchbishop of Manila on June 24, 2021. He became acardinal in November 2020. He previously served asBishop of San Carlos from 2001 to 2011 andArchbishop of Cápiz from 2011 to 2021. On December 16, 2020, Pope Francis appointed Advincula as a member of theDicastery for Clergy .
Early life and studies [ edit ] Advíncula was born on March 30, 1952, inDumalag, Capiz , to José Firmalino Advíncula and Carmen Falsis Fuerte.[ 1] He studied atSaint Pius X Seminary High School inRoxas City whereJaime Sin became his teacher, and stayed on after graduating to study philosophy. He then attended theology courses at theUniversity of Santo Tomas inManila .
He later studied Master of Arts in Education major in Guidance and Counseling atDe La Salle University and thencanon law at theUniversity of Santo Tomás and at theAngelicum inRome , where he earned a licentiate in canon law, During these studies he joined theOrder of Preachers .[ 2]
He was ordained a priest of the archdiocese of Cápiz on April 14, 1976.[ 3] He worked as spiritual director ofSt. Pius X Seminary while also professor and dean of studies.[citation needed ]
After finishing his studies abroad, he returned to the Philippines and worked at the seminary ofNueva Segovia inVigan ,Ilocos Sur , and in the regional seminary ofJaro . In 1995, he becamerector ofSt. Pius X Seminary of Cápiz; he also held positions in the administration of the archdiocese asdefender of the bond ,promoter of justice , andjudicial vicar . In 1999, he became parish priest of Santo Tomás de Villanueva Parish inDao, Capiz .[ 3]
San Carlos episcopate [ edit ] Pope John Paul II appointed himbishop of San Carlos inNegros on July 25, 2001,[ 4] and he received his episcopal consecration on September 8, 2001.[ 3]
On November 9, 2011,Pope Benedict XVI named him archbishop of Cápiz.[ 5] [ 6] He was installed at theImmaculate Conception Metropolitan Cathedral inRoxas City on January 11, 2012.[ 7] Advincula and fellow archbishopsLuis Antonio Tagle ofManila ,John F. Du ofPalo , andRomulo Valles ofDavao received thepallium — the symbol of their authority asmetropolitan archbishops — from Benedict XVI on June 29, 2012, in Rome.[ 8]
Within theCatholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines , he has been a member of the Commission for the Doctrine of the Faith and Commission for Indigenous Peoples.[ 3]
Elevation to cardinalate [ edit ] Pope Francis created him as acardinal in a consistory on November 28, 2020, assigning him as acardinal priest toSan Vigilio in Via Paolo Di Dono .[ 9] He was not able to attend the consistory because ofCOVID-19 pandemic risks and restrictions.[ 10] In lieu of the consistory, Advincula received his scarletbiretta and ring fromCharles John Brown , theApostolic Nuncio to the Philippines , on June 18, 2021, at the Immaculate Conception Metropolitan Cathedral inRoxas City .[ 11] [ 12]
On December 16, 2020, he was named a member of theCongregation for the Clergy .[ 13]
On March 3, 2023, Pope Francis appointed Baguio BishopVictor Barnuevo Bendico (also his former vicar general) to succeed Advincula as Archbishop of Capiz.
On January 15, 2021, all eight bishops in the ecclesiastical provinces of Capiz andJaro —namely, Advincula,Jose Romeo Lazo ,Jose Corazon Tala-oc ,Narciso Abellana ,Marvyn Maceda ,Patricio Buzon ,Gerardo Alminaza , andLouie Galbines —issued a jointpastoral letter [ 14] calling for an investigation to the joint military and police operation in the towns ofTapaz in Capiz andCalinog in Iloilo on December 30, 2020, that killed nine leaders of theTumandok indigenous people's group that opposes theJalaur mega dam project. The families of the victims claimed that they are victims ofred-tagging and that firearms and explosives were planted. The pastoral letter was read on January 24.[ 15]
However, thetask force to end local communist armed conflict in Western Visayas said that the bishops were misinformed and accused the bishops of not issuing statements when government forces and civilians are killed in rebel attacks. The military and the police maintained that those who were killed and arrested were leaders of theCommunist Party of the Philippines andNew People's Army , while relatives of the victims contend that those killed were gunned down and unarmed and that firearms were planted.[ 15]

On March 25, 2021, Pope Francis appointed Advincula asArchbishop of Manila , to succeedLuis Antonio Tagle , who vacated the post on February 9, 2020, after being appointedprefect of theCongregation for the Evangelization of Peoples on December 8, 2019.[ 16] [ 17] He is the first archbishop of Manila to be already a cardinal upon appointment to the see. Past Manila archbishops were made cardinals after their installation.[citation needed ]
Advincula was installed on June 24, 2021, thefeast day of Saint John the Baptist , by ArchbishopCharles John Brown ,Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines , together with CardinalGaudencio Rosales and CardinalOrlando Quevedo . He is the 33rd Archbishop of Manila, and the sixth native Filipino to hold the post, following centuries of Spanish, American, and Irish prelates.[ 18] His installation coincided with the death of formerPresident Benigno Aquino III , which led Advincula to offer prayers towards the end of the Mass.[ 19] Advincula and Brown visited Aquino's wake at theChurch of the Gesù inQuezon City the next day.[ 20]
On December 8, 2021, theFeast of the Immaculate Conception , Advincula received thepallium asmetropolitan archbishop of theecclesiastical province of Manila from Pope Francis, through Archbishop Brown.[ 21]
On December 11, 2021, Advincula made his solemn profession as a professed member of the Priestly Fraternities of St. Dominic, asociety of apostolic life under theOrder of Preachers . Making his solemn profession to the prior provincial of the order in the Philippines, Filemon dela Cruz, Advincula received the white religious habit of the order.[ 22]
On April 30, 2022, Advincula was installed Cardinal-Priest ofParrocchia San Vigilio inRome ,Italy .[ 23] On July 13, 2022, Pope Francis named him a member of theDicastery for Bishops .[ 24]
On June 3, 2023, Advincula received hishonorary doctorate degree inapplied theology fromDe La Salle University .[ 25]
Political involvement [ edit ] Following the passage of theAbsolute Divorce Bill in May 2024, Advincula viewed the bill as a challenge for the Catholic Church in its ministry on the importance of theSacrament of Matrimony . He added that the law is "not a magic pill that can solve marital problems".[ 26]
Events in the Philippines under PresidentBongbong Marcos forced Advincula to become involved in politics. He appealed for prayer,sobriety , humility, forgiveness, reconciliation and statesmanship amid theMarcos –Duterte feud resulting in the risingcontentious politics .[ 27]
In the wake of rising political tensions following thearrest of Rodrigo Duterte in March 2025, Advincula issued anOratio Imperata as the nation faces "a time of crisis, conflict and confusion".[ 28]
On May 23, 2021, the Archdiocese of Manila – Office of Communications and theManila Cathedral , through their social media accounts, showed Advíncula's coat of arms as archbishop of Manila for the first time. It has the coat of arms of the Archdiocese of Manila combined with Advíncula's personal coat of arms, under an ecclesiastical hat with tassels knotted in a different way than his coat of arms as archbishop of Capiz.[ 29] [ 30] [non-primary source needed ]
The coat of arms was released by the Chancery of the Archdiocese of Manila on June 6, 2021.[ 31]

The Dominican tradition is significant in Advincula's education and formation.[ 32] Symbolism The lily is a symbol of theBlessed Virgin Mary . The carpenter's square is a symbol ofSaint Joseph , who is his namesake in Spanish and his personal patron saint. The chain of nine links represents his surnameAdvincula which is derived from the Latin phrasead vincula orin chains . The gold background represents virtue, which the might of the Christian brings glory to God. The mountain represents Mt. Paningraon in the town ofDumalag, Capiz , his birthplace and hometown. It is a mountain that shows strips of limestone formation and a raging horse which locals attribute to their town's titular patron,Saint Martin of Tours . The crescent symbolizes the Blessed Virgin Mary as theImmaculate Conception , the titular patroness of the Archdiocese of Capiz and St. Pius X Seminary in Roxas City, Capiz, where he finished his minor seminary formation and philosophical studies.
