José Antonio "Toño"Rodríguez Romero (born 4 July 1992),[1] is a Mexican professionalfootballer who plays as agoalkeeper forLiga MX clubTijuana. He is anOlympic gold medalist.[2]
Rodríguez started his career forLiga MX clubGuadalajara, and made his debut on 6 April 2013 againstJaguares.[3] In 2011, he was loaned toVeracruz for two seasons, and was the starting goalkeeper for the team. He returned to Guadalajara after two successful seasons with Veracruz, and became the starting goalkeeper of Guadalajara in 2014 afterLuis Ernesto Michel was loaned toSaprissa of Costa Rica.
On 26 November 2019, Rodríguezscored a goal from inside his own box during Guadalajara's 3–1 win against Veracruz.[4]
Rodríguez has represented Mexico in theU-17,U-20, andU-23 divisions, as well as thesenior national team. He was among the squad that won thegold medal at the 2012 London Summer Olympics.[2] In March 2023, Rodríguez received his first call-up to thesenior national team byDiego Cocca, and made his debut on 7 June 2023, in a friendly match againstGuatemala entering at halftime substitutingLuis Malagón.[5]
