Jonathan Milan (born 1 October 2000) is an Italian professionaltrack androad cyclist, who currently rides forUCI WorldTeamLidl–Trek.[4]

Career

Milan rode in themen's team pursuit event at the2020 UCI Track Cycling World Championships inBerlin, Germany, winning a bronze medal.[5] He won the gold medal in the team pursuit at the2020 Summer Olympics held at Tokyo in 2021, setting a new world record.[6] He was also on the winning team for theteam pursuit at theUCI World Championships that year, also taking silver in theindividual pursuit. In 2022, Milan won silver medals at the World Championships in both theteam andindividual pursuit, followed by a silver and bronze medal in 2023, respectively.

In 2024, Milan set aworld record for theindividual pursuit at the World Championships, winning a gold medal.[7]

Road

Milan rode forCycling Team Friuli as an under-23 rider in 2019 and 2020, and was crowned the 2020 national under-23 time trial champion.

In 2021, he stepped up to the World Tour, joiningTeam Bahrain Victorious. The following season, he won his first pro road races, taking two stages of theCRO Race. He took an early season win in 2023 on stage two of theSaudi Tour, before competing in theGiro d'Italia in May, his first Grand Tour.[8] Milan won the stage two sprint, going on to finish second on four more occasions. He ultimately won thePoints classification ahead ofDerek Gee.[9] He ended the year at theTour of Guangxi in October, where he won the second stage.[10]

In February 2024, Milan won stage 3 of theVolta a la Comunitat Valenciana, his first race of the season.[11] He then won two stages ofTirreno–Adriatico in March.[12] This was followed by a campaign in the spring classics, where he finished in 5th inGent–Wevelgem and 7th in theDwars door Vlaanderen. His next race was theGiro d'Italia for the second year in a row, where he again saw success early on, taking second on stage three before winning the following day.[13]

Personal life

He is named after the seagull inRichard Bach's novellaJonathan Livingston Seagull, which his mother read during her pregnancy.[14] His father Flavio and younger brotherMatteo are also cyclists.[15]
