Jonathan Porter Berkey is ahistorian specializing inIslam and theMiddle East. He is currentlyprofessor ofhistory atDavidson College.He received abachelor's degree fromWilliams College, and hisdoctorate fromPrinceton University.^[1] In 2003 he was given theAlbert Hourani Book Award by theMiddle Eastern Studies Association for his bookThe Formation of Islam: Religion and Society in the Near East, 600–1800.^[2]
