Jonathan Stuart Bailey (born 25 April 1988) is an English actor known for his dramatic, comedic, and musical roles onstage and screen. His accolades include aLaurence Olivier Award and aCritics' Choice Television Award as well as a nomination for aPrimetime Emmy Award .
Bailey began his career as a child actor inRoyal Shakespeare Company productions and by eight was performing asGavroche in aWest End production ofLes Misérables . He starred in contemporary plays such asThe York Realist in 2018 andCock in 2022; in classical plays likeOthello in 2013 andRichard II in 2025; as well as in musicals, namely the London revival ofThe Last Five Years in 2016 and the West Endgender-swapped revival ofCompany for which he won theLaurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical in 2019.
On screen, Bailey starred in the action-adventure seriesLeonardo (2011–2012) and the musical-comedyGroove High (2012–2013) before becoming known for the crime dramaBroadchurch (2013–2015) and the comedyCrashing (2016). He gained wider recognition for his roles in theRegency romance seriesBridgerton (2020–present) and the political miniseriesFellow Travelers (2023) which won him aCritics' Choice Television Award as well as a nomination for aPrimetime Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor. His role asFiyero in the musical fantasy filmWicked (2024) earned him a nomination for aSAG Award for Best Supporting Actor .
Jonathan Stuart Bailey was born on 25 April 1988, inWallingford, Oxfordshire ,[ 1] the son of Carole, anaudiologist , and Stuart Bailey, who was the managing director ofRowse Honey .[ 2] [ 3] [ 4] He grew up in nearbyBenson andBrightwell-cum-Sotwell ,[ 5] and has three older sisters.[ 6] [ 7] He described his upbringing as a "co-operative of four brilliant women and a dad who has an incredible work ethic".[ 6] He decided that he wanted to be an actor at the age of five after his grandmother took him to see a production ofOliver! in London.[ 1] His first ever appearance on stage was in a primary school production ofNoah's Ark , playing a raindrop.[ 8]
Bailey attended the localChurch of England -affiliated Benson Primary School,[ 5] thenThe Oratory School while taking ballet lessons. He later had a music scholarship toMagdalen College School, Oxford where he played the piano and clarinet.[ 3] [ 9] After securing a talent agent at 15 years old and booking acting roles, he eventually declined his university acceptance offer and opted not to go to drama school,[ 10] [ 11] later saying that this kept him grounded in the performing arts: "I've never gone in as the overdog, and that's liberating and I don't want that to ever change. I just want to allow my own experiences to come through."[ 12] [ 13]
Beginnings as a child actor (1995–2010)[ edit ] TheBarbican Theatre where Bailey made his professional acting debut at the age of seven for theRoyal Shakespeare Company Through his dance club inHenley-on-Thames , Bailey auditioned for and landed the alternating roles ofTiny Tim and YoungScrooge in the 1995Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) production ofA Christmas Carol at theBarbican Theatre in London at seven years old.[ 14] [ 15] He sang "Where Is Love? " fromOliver! for his audition.[ 16] The following year, he made his television debut in theVictorian period dramaBramwell .[ 17] Bailey also played Little Baptiste in the RSC's 1996 production ofLes Enfants du Paradis . By eight years old, he was performing asGavroche in aWest End production ofLes Misérables . He has also donepantomime in a production ofPeter Pan atThe Hexagon playing Michael Darling.[ 18]
In 2001, Bailey playedPrince Arthur for theRSC 'sKing John .[ 19] He made his feature film debut in 2004 inFive Children and It , a film adaptation ofE. Nesbit 'sfantasy novel of the same name.[ 20] In 2006, on the last day of hisA levels , he started rehearsing for a revival of the playBeautiful Thing in London, taking over the lead role fromAndrew Garfield .[ 13] The Telegraph wrote that Bailey "memorably lit up" the production.[ 21] That role was followed by guest roles in long-runningBritish television staples likeDoctors andThe Bill .[ 22] His first leading role on television was in the 2009BBC sitcomOff the Hook about a group of first-year university students.[ 23]
Television breakthrough and success on stage (2011–2019)[ edit ] In 2011, Bailey played the titularLeonardo da Vinci in the 2011CBBC action-adventure seriesLeonardo , which follows a young Leonardo and his friends in 15th centuryFlorence .[ 12] The show ran for two series, spawned an online game,[ 24] and received fourKidScreen Awards .[ 25] [ 26] The same year, he starred in the comedyCampus , a semi-improvised sitcom in which he played Flatpack, a student athlete with Olympic potential.[ 27]
Bailey was nominated for Outstanding Newcomer at theEvening Standard Theatre Awards for his performance inDavid Hare 's playSouth Downs atMinerva Theatre in 2011, and its later transfer toHarold Pinter Theatre the following year.[ 28] [ 29] The Telegraph described him as a future star and one of "the brightest up-and-coming actors currently starring on the West End stage."[ 30] He also led theDisney Channel musical-comedyGroove High playing thepopstar Tom that ran from 2012 to 2013 for 26 episodes and was a mixture of live action and animation where Bailey sang and also did the voiceover of his character's animated form.[ 31]
In 2013, Bailey rose to popularity for playing the local journalist Olly Stevens in the first two series of the hit crime-dramaBroadchurch onITV .[ 32] [ 33] On stage, he was cast by thenRoyal National Theatre 's artistic directorNicholas Hytner as Cassio in his production ofWilliam Shakespeare 'sOthello at theOlivier Theatre in 2013.[ 34] Bailey considers this his "big break" with Hytner also becoming his mentor.[ 35] The production was shown to cinemas viaNational Theatre Live . His "likable, open-faced",[ 36] and "smoothly ambitious"[ 37] Cassio was "splendid",[ 38] perThe Washington Post . Hytner also directed Bailey in one of the vignettes forNational Theatre Live: 50 Years On Stage where he played Valentine Coverly fromTom Stoppard 'sArcadia .[ 39]
Bailey in 2015 Bailey originated the role of Tim Price inDuncan Sheik 's musicalAmerican Psycho directed byRupert Goold at theAlmeida Theatre .[ 40] [ 41] He then guest starred in theDoctor Who episode "Time Heist " in 2014.[ 42] The episode was described byThe Independent as "a fast-paced caper" with Bailey stealing the show with his compelling performance as augmented human Psi.[ 43] He also had a supporting role in the period filmTestament of Youth (2014).[ 44] Bailey returned to comedy in BBC's satirical showW1A as Jack, a role he would play for three series.[ 45]
In 2016, Bailey starred as Sam, a sex-obsessed estate agent inPhoebe Waller-Bridge 's first television projectCrashing thatW magazine described as a "twisted version ofFriends ".[ 46] The same year, he headlined the London production of the musicalThe Last Five Years as Jamie with music, lyrics, and direction byJason Robert Brown atSt. James Theatre .The Stage ' sMark Shenton called the production "poignant" turning "each song into a masterclass of storytelling" with Bailey "a real vocal surprise with his haunting renditions of 'If I Didn't Believe in You' and 'Nobody Needs to Know'."[ 47] Edward Seckerson ofThe Arts Desk wrote, in his five-star review, that Bailey was "sensationally good" and delivered tour-de-forcemusical performances of "Moving Too Fast" and "The Schmuel Song".[ 48]
Bailey appeared alongsideIan McKellen in the acclaimed production ofKing Lear atChichester Festival Theatre in 2017.[ 49] He received rave reviews[ 6] for his performance as Edgar which theEvening Standard described as "a touching study of transformation".[ 50] Bailey also made a guest appearance in series two episode two ofMichaela Coel 's sitcomChewing Gum in 2017 where he played Ash, a romantic interest to Coel's character Tracey.[ 51]
From February to April 2018, Bailey starred inDonmar Warehouse -Sheffield Theatres co-production ofPeter Gill 'sThe York Realist . TheEvening Standard ,[ 52] The Arts Desk ,[ 53] andSunday Express [ 54] gave the production five stars, withThe Independent calling it "a pitch-perfect, impeccably acted production" in its own five-star review.[ 55] Bailey joined the2018 West End production ofStephen Sondheim 'sCompany directed byMarianne Elliott .[ 56] He originated the gender-swapped role of Jamie which was initially written as a female character named Amy.[ 57] PerThe Times , Bailey "received an ovation every night after completing the infamous 'Getting Married Today ' a rat-tat-tat, mile-a-minute technical feat, lyrically, about marriage jitters."[ 8] His "lightning-fast, show-stopping rendition of the song became a must-see West End event" according toVariety , and won him the2019 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical .[ 58]
Worldwide recognition and work on film (2020–present)[ edit ] Since 2020, Bailey has starred in theShondaland -producedNetflix seriesBridgerton , an adaptation ofJulia Quinn 'sRegency romance novels , asAnthony, 9th Viscount Bridgerton .[ 59] His portrayal was critically acclaimed, and gained him wide recognition.[ 60] [ 61] [ 62] The second series, which centered around his character, became themost watched English-language television series on Netflix at the time.[ 63] [ 64] [ 65] The Daily Beast elaborating on Bailey's "exquisite lead performance", wrote that "he has an exceptional ability to carry his angst, pain, and guilt with him without bogging down things into a somber drag."[ 66]
Bailey headlined the acclaimed[ 67] 2022 West End revival ofMike Bartlett 's playCock at theAmbassadors Theatre , reuniting him with hisCompany director Elliot.[ 68] [ 69] The Observer called it an "immaculate production",[ 70] withThe Arts Desk writing that it was "brutal, bruising, and brilliant".[ 71] In the lead role, Bailey's "terrific performance"[ 72] was "utterly captivating",[ 73] withVariety noting that his "whiplash comic timing lifts his character from self-obsessed to scintillating, a quality he uses both artfully and artlessly."[ 74]
In 2023, Bailey starred oppositeMatt Bomer in theShowtime adaptation ofFellow Travelers .[ 75] His performance was described byThe Washington Post as "sensational"[ 76] and won him aCritics' Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries and earned him a nomination for aPrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie .[ 77] [ 78] The following year, he had a guest appearance in the third series of the teen dramaHeartstopper .[ 79]
Bailey playedFiyero in the musical fantasy filmWicked (2024) based on themusical of the same name , and will reprise his role in itssecond part in 2025.[ 80] He was deemed a standout by critics withThe Guardian writing that he "uncorks an outrageous scene-stealer as thehetero -camp Fiyero",[ 81] [ 82] andABC News noting that his performance was a "display of song, dance and acting virtuosity".[ 83] He contributed to thefilm's soundtrack with the song "Dancing Through Life ", which debuted at number 90 onBillboard Hot 100 , peaking at number 86.[ 84] [ 85] His performance earned him a nomination for aScreen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role , alongside another nomination for the film's cast forOutstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture .[ 86]
He plays the titular role ofRichard II at theBridge Theatre inNicholas Hytner 's production ofShakespeare 'splay of thesame name until May 2025.[ 87] Bailey will also star inJurassic World Rebirth (2025) directed byGareth Edwards .[ 88]
Bailey has been described by the media as asex symbol whose fans, according to theLos Angeles Times , span "allgenders andorientations ".[ 89] [ 90] TIME magazine included Bailey in its annual class ofNext Generation Leaders in 2022, writing that he is "redefining the 'Hollywood Heartthrob'".[ 91] [ 92]
Bailey in 2022 CriticPeter Travers described Bailey as "a dynamite actor equally adept at drama and musicals."[ 93] Describing Bailey's off-screen persona,The Cut ' s Kerensa Cadenas noted that talking to him is "a lesson in charm – he's personable, super-handsome, and utterly hilarious."[ 51] Douglas Greenwood ofGQ wrote that "dispositionally, he's one of those actors who'd rather work than be famous".[ 94]
Phoebe Waller-Bridge described her former co-star as "completely brilliant... unbelievablycharismatic in real life and so energetic",[ 95] "Jonny operates at a different voltage. He's a meteorite of fun with an incredible amount of energy and playfulness."[ 94] DirectorMarianne Elliott expressed that Bailey is "the nicest person you could ever hope to meet. But when he acts, he can have an edge, which can feel dangerous in a great way. An unpredictability."[ 11] Elliott recalled thatStephen Sondheim was enamored with Bailey.[ 11] Three days before the composer died in 2021, Elliott told him that Bailey would be starring in the playCock . Sondheim "literally stopped in his tracks, closed his eyes, put his hand on his chest and said, 'Be still my beating heart,'" Elliott recounted.[ 11]
Bailey is considered one of the leading LGBTQ+ figures in the entertainment industry and has been included in several influential lists includingAttitude 's Trailblazers in 2020,[ 96] [ 97] Variety 's Power of Pride list in 2022,[ 98] Out 's Most Impactful and Influential in 2023,[ 99] andThe Independent ' s Pride List in 2024.[ 100] GQ described him as "one of the few gay British actors working onscreen whose roles don't seem defined wholly by their sexuality."[ 94] Pride declared that he is proof gay actors can convincingly play straight roles,[ 101] withOut writing that Bailey's visibility is inspiring LGBTQ+ performers tocome out .[ 61]
Bailey resides inHove, East Sussex .[ 102] [ 103] An avid cyclist, he has also competed inmarathons andtriathlons in addition to being fond ofpaddleboarding andmountaineering .[ 104] [ 105] [ 6] In 2018, he hiked theEverest Base Camp in Nepal ; the following year, he participated in theNational Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for the Scottish branch of theMotor Neurone Disease Association .[ 32] [ 106] In 2024, he ran theHackney Half Marathon to benefit LGBTQ+ youth charity Just Like Us of which he is a patron.[ 107] [ 108]
Bailey privatelycame out as gay to friends and family in his early 20s,[ 94] but did not comment on it in public for another decade.[ 45] [ 32] He came out publicly in 2018.[ 109] [ 110] Although cautious of discussing his sexuality, which he sees as a personal matter that "becomes a commodity and a currency",[ 7] he is committed to visibility and representation saying: "If I can fill spaces that I didn't have growing up then I feel like that's a really brilliant thing."[ 111] He also called this "something [he'll] always strive to do".[ 7]
In 2024, Bailey launched the charity The Shameless Fund that "aims to help members of the queer community across the world live freely and authentically" by raising money through celebrity and brand partnerships. The charity's debut collaboration was with fashion brandLoewe 's "Drink Your Milk" collection.[ 112]
