BrigadierJohn Percival WhiteleyOBE (7 January 1898 – 4 July 1943[1]) was aBritish Army officer and aConservative Party politician.

Born in January 1898 inSouth Africa,[2] Whiteley was commissioned into theRoyal Artillery during theFirst World War, ending the war as alieutenant. In 1926 he transferred to theLife Guards, retiring in 1928 and joining the 99th (Buckinghamshire and Berkshire Yeomanry) Field Brigade, Royal Artillery (Territorial Army) as acaptain. He was promotedmajor in 1932.

He stood unsuccessfully at the1929 general election inBirmingham Aston,[3] and entered theHouse of Commons eight years later when he was elected asMember of Parliament (MP) forBuckingham at aby-election in 1937, after the sitting MPGeorge Bowyer was elevated to the peerage asBaron Denham.[4]

WhenWorld War II broke out, Whiteley resumed military service.[5] He was active atDunkirk,[5] and died in 1943, aged 45, when he was killed ina plane crash in Gibraltar, along with the Conservative MPVictor Cazalet and GeneralWładysław Sikorski, the leader of thePolish government-in-exile.[5]
