John William Dawson, Jr. (born February 4, 1944)[1] is an American academic who is an emeritus professor of mathematics atPenn State York.
Born inWichita, Kansas, Dawson attended theMassachusetts Institute of Technology as aNational Merit Scholar before earning a doctorate inmathematical logic from theUniversity of Michigan in 1972.[2]
An internationally recognized authority on the life and work ofKurt Gödel, Dawson is the author of numerous articles onaxiomatic set theory and the history ofmodern logic. From 1982 to 1984, he catalogued Gödel's papers at theInstitute for Advanced Study. He also served as a co-editor ofGödel's Collected Works. He retired as co-editor-in-chief of the journalHistory and Philosophy of Logic.[3]
