John Robert Slosar[1] (Chinese:史樂山) is an American-bornHong Kong businessman. He was the chairman and CEO ofCathay Pacific and chairman ofSwire Pacific.
Slosar was born inCleveland, Ohio.[2] He graduated fromColumbia University, where he played soccer and American football.[3][4] He then attended theUniversity of Cambridge.[5]
Slosar joined theSwire group in 1980 as a management trainee.[6] In 1996, he became managing director of theHong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company.[6] In 1998, he became managing director of Swire beverages.
In 2011, Slosar became the chief executive ofCathay Pacific Airways. In 2014, he was promoted to Chairman ofSwire Pacific,Swire Properties,Cathay Pacific Airways,Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Co. Ltd., and Swire beverages, becoming the 35th and the first non-British chairman of the company.[7]
In 2015, Slosar was bestowed theLegion of Honour by theFrench government.[8] He was a director ofAir China,PureCircle, and a member of the Council ofLingnan University and the International Advisory Board ofHong Kong Polytechnic University.[9][10]
Slosar stepped down from his chairmanship ofSwire in 2018.[11] He stayed on as the chairman ofCathay Pacific until 2019.[12] During the2019–20 Hong Kong protests, he resisted pressure to suspend employees who participated in the protests and supported the staff's right to protest by saying that “We certainly wouldn’t dream of telling them what they have to think about something.”[13] Slosar resigned in September 2019, before his board term was due to expire in May 2020.[14]
Slosar is married to Joy Slosar, who is from Thailand.[2] His daughter, Dana Slosar,[15] won the sixth season ofAsia's Next Top Model.[16] It is reported that Slosar renounced hisUnited States citizenship in 2010 and became a Chinese national.[17]
