John W. Parry (born May 4, 1965) is an American formerfootball official who worked in theNational Football League (NFL) from 2000 through the 2018 season.[1] He wore uniform number 132[2] and was the referee for twoSuper Bowls. From 2019 through the 2023 season, Parry was therules analyst for NFL telecasts onABC andESPN includingMonday Night Football and postseason games.

Career

Parry was promoted to referee for the2007 season following the retirement ofBill Vinovich due to health issues.[3]

In 2018, Parry's NFL officiating crew consisted of umpire Mark Pellis, down judge David Oliver, line judge Julian Mapp, field judge Matt Edwards, side judge Michael Banks, back judge Perry Paganelli, replay official Jimmy Oldham, and replay assistant Roddy Ames.[4]

Parry retired on April 1, 2019, accepting a position withESPN to be therules analyst forMonday Night Football.[5] He worked at ESPN for five seasons before leaving for a job as an officiating liaison for theBuffalo Bills.[6][7]

Notable games

Parry officiatedSuper Bowl XLI in 2007 as a side judge on the crew headed by refereeTony Corrente.[8] Parry was the referee ofSuper Bowl XLVI, which was held February 5, 2012, atLucas Oil Stadium inIndianapolis.[9] Parry refereed his last NFL game and second NFL title game on February 3, 2019, inSuper Bowl LIII atMercedes-Benz Stadium inAtlanta.[10][11]

In 2014, Parry worked a Patriots–Eagles preseason game withMaia Chaka. Chaka was a head linesman, now known as the down judge, becoming one of the first female NFL officials.[12]

Parry was the referee of the2015 Pro Bowl.[13]

Parry's crew officiated the2015 AFC wild card game between thePittsburgh Steelers and theCincinnati Bengals, which was filled with injuries and personal fouls on both sides,[14] and which sportswriterMike Freeman later called "one of the dirtiest and ugliest contests in the modern era of the sport".[15]

Personal life

Parry is a native ofMichigan City, Indiana and a graduate ofMichigan City Rogers High School.[16] He is also an associatefinancial advisor forAmeriprise Financial insuburbanTallmadge.[17] His father, Dave Parry, was the Supervisor of Officials for theBig Ten Conference and the side judge inSuper Bowl XVII.[3]
