John Michael Jumper (born 1985)[1] is an American chemist and computer scientist. Jumper andDemis Hassabis were awarded the 2024Nobel Prize in Chemistry forprotein structure prediction.[2][3]

As of 2025[update] Jumper serves as director atGoogle DeepMind.[4][5][6] Jumper and his colleagues createdAlphaFold,[7] anartificial intelligence (AI) model to predictprotein structures from theiramino acid sequence with high accuracy.[8] The AlphaFold team had released 214 million protein structures as of January 2024.[9]

The scientific journalNature included Jumper as one of the ten "people who mattered" in science in their annual listing ofNature's 10 in 2021.[8][10]

Education

[edit]

Jumper graduated fromPulaski Academy in 2003[11]. He received aBachelor of Science with majors in physics and mathematics fromVanderbilt University in 2007,[12] aMaster of Philosophy intheoretical condensed matter physics from theUniversity of Cambridge where he was a student ofSt Edmund’s College, Cambridge in 2010 on aMarshall Scholarship,[13] aMaster of Science intheoretical chemistry from theUniversity of Chicago in 2012, and aDoctor of Philosophy in theoretical chemistry from the University of Chicago in 2017.[14] His doctoral advisors at the University of Chicago were Tobin R. Sosnick andKarl Freed.[15]

Career and research

[edit]

Jumper's research investigates algorithms forprotein structure prediction.[4]

AlphaFold[7][16] is adeep learning algorithm developed by Jumper and his team at DeepMind, a research lab acquired by Google's parent companyAlphabet Inc. It is an artificial intelligence program which performspredictions of protein structure.[17]

Awards and honors

[edit]

In November 2020, AlphaFold was named the winner of the 14thCritical Assessment of Structure Prediction (CASP) competition.[18][19][20] This international competition benchmarks algorithms to determine which one can best predict the 3D structure of proteins. AlphaFold won the competition, outperforming other algorithms scoring above 90 for around two-thirds of the proteins in CASP'sglobal distance test (GDT), a test that measures the degree to which a computational program predicted structure is similar to the lab experiment determined structure, with 100 being a complete match, within the distance cutoff used for calculating GDT.[21][22]

In 2021, Jumper was awarded theBBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the category "Biology and Biomedicine".[23] In 2022 Jumper received theWiley Prize in Biomedical Sciences[24] and for 2023 theBreakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for developing AlphaFold, which accurately predicts the structure of a protein.[25] In 2023 he was awarded theCanada Gairdner International Award[26] and theAlbert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research.[27]

Jumper at the 2024 Nobel Week press conference

In 2024, Jumper andDemis Hassabis shared half of theNobel Prize in Chemistry for their protein folding predictions, the other half went toDavid Baker for computationalprotein design.[2][3]

In 2025, Jumper received the Golden Plate Award of theAmerican Academy of Achievement and the Marshall Medal of theMarshall Aid Commemoration Commission.[28][29] He was elected aFellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2025.[30]
