John Dennis (December 17, 1771 – August 17, 1806) was a Representative fromMaryland.
Dennis was born at his family home,Beverly, inPocomoke City in theProvince of Maryland, on December 17, 1771. He completed preparatory studies at Washington Academy, attendedYale College; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1793 and commenced practice inSomerset County, Maryland. He later served two terms in theMaryland House of Delegates, before being elected as aFederalist to theUnited States House of Representatives, where he served from March 4, 1797 to March 3, 1805.[1] During that time, Dennis was one of theHouse managers appointed in 1798 to conduct theimpeachment proceedings against SenatorWilliam Blount ofTennessee.[1][2]
He was the father ofJohn Dennis (1807–1859) and uncle ofLittleton Purnell Dennis.[1]
Dennis died inPhiladelphia,Pennsylvania, where he was interred inChrist Church Burial Ground.[1]
