John Campbell (19 August 1872 – 2 December 1947) was a Scottishfootballer, who played forCeltic,Aston Villa,Third Lanark and theScotland national team.
Campbell was born inGlasgow and began his football career atJunior teamBenburb[6] before stepping up to join Celtic in 1890, where he won two league championship titles inseason 1892–93 and1893–94 as well as theScottish Cup in1892.[7]
He moved to English clubAston Villa in thesummer of 1895 and won theEnglish league title in1895–96, while leading the league in goals with 22. Villa retained the league title in1896–97 and Campbell scored in the club'sFA Cupfinal triumph againstEverton to win thedomestic double. Just days later he had the honour of scoring the first goal atVilla Park.
He returned to Celtic soon after and won another league title inseason 1897–98 plus a further two Scottish Cup winners medals in1899 and1900.[7] He moved to Third Lanark in 1903 and helped them to the league title in hisfirst season with the club,[6][8] having scored aGlasgow Cup-winning goal against his former employers in the opening part of the season,[9][10] although he did not play inThirds' Scottish Cup win of1905.[11] He retired in 1906.
Campbell wascapped twelve times by Scotland between 1893 and 1903. He scored four goals, including two againstIreland in March 1900. He captained Scotland againstWales in 1902.
