Johannes Benedikt Volkmann (born 11 December 1996) is a German politician of theChristian Democratic Union (CDU). Since 2025, he has been aMember of the German Bundestag.[1]
Volkmann was born inCologne and raised inLahnau. He is the son ofWalter Kohl and academicChristine Volkmann. His grandfather is the formerChancellorHelmut Kohl. After graduating from the Landgraf-Ludwigs-Gymnasium inGießen in 2014, he studied sociology, Politics and Economics atZeppelin University inFriedrichshafen.[2][3] During his bachelor's he spent one semester atTongji UniversityShanghai and one atPeking University. He received a scholarship from theEvangelisches Studienwerk and studied in courses abroad atBelarusian State University inMinsk andIrkutsk National Research Technical University with theGerman Academic Exchange Service. In 2020 he graduated with a master's degree in Contemporary Chinese Studies from theUniversity of Oxford.[4][5]
From 2020 to 2025 he served as the Chief of Staff to the Member of theEuropean ParliamentSven Simon, serving as Chair of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs inBrussels. During this time he worked on a revision of theLisbon Treaty, a revised European electoral law and theEU-Mercosur Association Agreement.[6][7]
Volkmann is a practicingLutheran.[8] He lives inLahnau.
Volkmann joined the youth-wing of the CDU, theJunge Union in 2010 and the party in 2012. He held several offices in the student- and youth-wings of the party.[4]
In 2021 he was elected to theCounty Council ofLahn-Dill County in Germany throughpreferential voting and was elected Chairman of the council, at that time being the youngest head of a local government assembly in Germany. In his position he initiated municipal aid deliveries toUkraine,[9] a partnership agreement with the city ofBrovary and solidarity marches with Ukraine following theRussian invasion of the country.[10]
Volkmann was aclosed list candidate for the CDU at the2019 European Parliament election[11] and the2021 German federal election.[12]
In 2022 Volkmann was elected to the State board of the CDUHessen.[13] In 2024 he became the youngest elected member of theNational board of the CDU.[14][15]
In the2025 German federal election Volkmann was elected in theLahn-Dill constituency with 34,4%.[16]
