Joseph Eduardo Johns is an American lawyer and journalist. He is the Senior Washington Correspondent forCNN, based in theWashington, D.C., bureau. He was promoted to the position in 2014.[1][2] He previously worked as anNBC NewsCapitol Hill Correspondent forTODAY and otherNBC programs.[2] He worked forWRC-TV (NBC-4) in Washington, D.C. He also worked as an anchor forWSAZ-TV in 1980.[3]

In an interview withCapitol Standard magazine in 2016, Johns said of the lessons he's learned in media: "Be skeptical of hype. People who tell big lies don’t back down, even when confronted with the truth."[4]

Johns was a star discus thrower atWest High School inColumbus, Ohio.[5] He was a four-year scholarship track and field athlete atMarshall University[6] and was inducted into the Marshall University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003.[7] He holds a bachelor of arts degree in political science from Marshall University inHuntington, West Virginia, where he graduatedOmicron Delta Kappa, and aJ.D. degree fromAmerican University in D.C.[2]

Johns was married to formerMSNBC analystMichelle Bernard;[8][9]the couple divorced in 2008.[citation needed]
