John Hamilton Stirling (1887–1924) was a Scottishfootballer who played inthe Football League forBradford Park Avenue,Coventry City,Middlesbrough andStoke.[1]
Stirling was born inClydebank and played for both local sideClydebank Juniors and then forClyde (where he featured on the losing side in the1910 Scottish Cup Final)[2] before moving to England withMiddlesbrough in 1911.[1] He spent three seasons with theAyresome Park club under the management ofThomas McIntosh the side finished in 3rd position in theFirst Division during the1913–14 season. Stirling left forBradford Park Avenue where he spent the1914–15 season before football was halted due to the outbreak ofWorld War I.[1]
After the end of the war Stirling joinedStoke who had just re-gained theirFootball League status after falling foul of financial mismanagement.[1] He played in 21 matches for Stoke, scoring once againstStockport County in October 1919.[1] He left forCoventry City in March 1920 and played five matches for theSky Blues before returning to Scotland withDunfermline Athletic (then playing in theCentral League) andAlloa Athletic.[2]
At representative level, he played in theHome Scots v Anglo-Scots annual trial matches in 1912[3] and 1914[4] while with Middlesbrough, but never gained a fullcap forScotland. He also played in two editions of theGlasgow FA's annual challenge match againstSheffield while with Clyde.[2]
