Joanna McCallum (born 27 June 1950)[1] is an English theatre, film and television actress.

Early years and personal life

McCallum is the daughter of English actressGoogie Withers and Australian actorJohn McCallum, and was born in London.[1] She was educated atSt Catherine's School inMelbourne.[citation needed] McCallum graduated from theNational Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA)[2] in 1969. She is married to writerRoger Davenport.[citation needed]

Theatre

McCallum is best known for her extensive work in theatre. Notable roles includePortia inThe Merchant of Venice, withAlec Guinness asShylock (Chichester Festival Theatre, dir.Patrick Garland, 1984);[3] heading a vast cast as Jane Marryot inNoël Coward'sCavalcade (Chichester Festival Theatre, dir. David Gilmore, 1985);[4] and Margeurite Blakeney, oppositeDonald Sinden as Sir Percy Blakeney, inThe Scarlet Pimpernel (Her Majesty's Theatre, dir.Nicholas Hytner, 1985).[5] She was Meg Page, one ofThe Merry Wives of Windsor, withSusannah York as Alice Ford (Royal Shakespeare Company, dir. Ian Judge, 1997);[6] andGertrude, alongsideMark Rylance asHamlet, at the reconstructedGlobe Theatre on London'sSouth Bank (dir. Giles Block, 2000).[7] McCallum played Princess Dragomiroff in the 2022 production ofAgatha Christie'sMurder on the Orient Express (Chichester Festival Theatre, dir. Jonathan Church).[8][9]

Film and television

McCallum played the central character, Aroon, in a three part adaptation ofMolly Keane's Anglo Irish novelGood Behaviour (BBC Television, dir.Bill Hays, 1983),[10][11] and co-starred withTrevor Eve inA Wreath of Roses, adapted from the book byElizabeth Taylor (Granada Television, dir.John Madden, 1987).[12][13]

InThe Franchise Affair, a 1988 BBC Television serial, she played Marion Sharpe oppositeRosalie Crutchley andPatrick Malahide.[14] She was writer Winifred Holtby in the last episode ofTestament of Youth (BBC Television, 1979)[15] andVirginia Woolf in the filmTom & Viv (1994).[16]

McCallum played the missionary Alicia Bassett-Hill in the 1989 TV serialThe Ginger Tree, which was based on thenovel of the same name byOswald Wynd; it also starredSamantha Bond andDaisuke Ryu.[citation needed]

Her other television appearances have included episodes ofHolby City,[citation needed]All Creatures Great and Small,[citation needed] and Agatha Christie'sPoirot.[citation needed]

Other activities

Joanna McCallum is currently a Vice President of The Theatrical Guild,[17] (formerly The Theatrical Ladies Guild), having previously been Chairman, and has worked with the charity for many years. She is also a Vice President of Acting For Others,[18] and is active in fundraising work within the theatre community.
