João Victor Gomes da Silva (born 12 February 2001) is a Brazilian professionalfootballer who plays as acentral midfielder forPremier League clubWolverhampton Wanderers and theBrazil national team.
After figuring on the bench on 16 October 2020,[3] João Gomes made his first debut on 1 November 2020, starting forFlamengo in theSérie A at a 4–1 home defeat againstSão Paulo.[4]
On 30 January 2023, João Gomes signed forWolverhampton Wanderers in thePremier League for €18.7 million, after a drawn out battle between Wolves andLigue 1 clubLyon for his signature.[5][6]
Gomes scored the winning goal in a 2–1 comeback victory for Wolves atSouthampton in the Premier League on his debut appearance for the club (as a second-half substitute) on 11 February 2023 – this despite Wolves being reduced to ten men after aMario Lemina red card in the first half.[7]
Gomes was sent off after only nine minutes of his debut appearance in theFA Cup away toBrentford on 5 January 2024.[8]
Gomes scored his second and third goals for Wolves (his first in just over a year, and first of the2023–24 season) in the same game, giving his team a 2–1 away victory overTottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on 17 February 2024.[9]
Gomes's first goal of the2024–25 season salvaged a point for Wolves in a 2–2 draw atMolineux versusCrystal Palace on 2 November 2024.[10] Gomes then scoredWolves second goal in a 4–1 win againstFulham as the club moved out of the relegation zone for the first time all season.[citation needed] On 1 April 2025, Gomes signed a new five-year contract with Wolverhampton, with the option of a further year.[11]
On 23 March 2024, Gomes debuted for theBrazilian senior squad in afriendly match againstEngland.[12]
Gomes has been a long-time practitioner ofBrazilian jiu-jitsu, and was promoted to blue belt in the sport on 30 June 2023.[13]
