João Carlos Serra Ferreira Pereira (born 11 April 1965) is a Portuguesefootballmanager and former player. As a player he was awinger.
Born inLuanda,Portuguese Angola toPortuguese parents, Pereira started playing football withA.C. Marinhense, and went on to spend one season in theSegunda Liga with the club. From1985 to1987 he representedAcadémica de Coimbra in thePrimeira Liga, but was never more than a reserve player.[3][4][5]
Pereira retired professionally in June 1990 at the age of only 25, after spells in the second division withMoreirense F.C. andC.D. Trofense.
Pereira began coaching aged just 32, starting with Marinhense indivision three and moving in 2001 to fellow league sideS.C. Pombal.[6] His top-flight debut came in the2003–04 campaign with another former club, Académica, which he led to the 13th place.[7]
In early 2005, after being fired by theStudents, Pereira signed withC.D. Nacional[8] and moved shortly after to Moreirense,[9] then spent the next year without a team until he joinedKuwait'sAl-Tadamon SC.[10] After leadingG.D. Estoril Praia to the fourth place in2008–09's second tier,[11] he returned to the top division by signing a two-year contract withC.F. Os Belenenses, which had previouslybeen relegated only to avoid it later due toC.F. Estrela da Amadora's serious financial problems.[12][13]
On 21 December 2009, following a series of poor results (culminating in the 1–0 away loss againstU.D. Leiria), Pereira resigned at Belenenses although they were still above the relegation zone[14]– eventually not managing toretain their status.[15] On 9 December of the following year he moved toCyprus, being appointed atErmis Aradippou FC[16][17] and asking to be released at the end ofthe season after managing to avoidFirst Division relegation by registering a club-record 30 points in the competition, 38 after the second stage.[18]
Pereira replaced countrymanJoão Alves at the helm of Swiss clubServette FC on 28 November 2011,[19] being replaced in April 2012 by his predecessor.[20] During his tenure they won fourSuper League matches, drew two and lost seven.
After six years working withAspire Academy, Pereira returned for another spell as Académica coach on 18 November 2019, with the team now in the second division.[21] He went back to Switzerland the following August, being appointed atGrasshopper Club Zürich in theChallenge League.[22] He was dismissed on 12 May 2021 following three consecutive defeats although the clubtopped the league table,[23] being eventually promoted.[24]
Pereira re-joined Académica for the third time on 22 September 2021, with the side bottom of the second tier.[25] He was relieved of his duties in November, having collected five losses in as many games.[26]
