Arthur James Jewell (1898–1952), also known asA. J. Jewell, was an Englishassociation footballmanager andreferee who during his career coachedNorwich City in 1939.[1]
Jewell was born inWest Hampstead,London in 1898.[2] During theFirst World War, he served in theRoyal Naval Air Service and became one of the first pilots of theRoyal Air Force in 1918.[3]
He refereed in the1938 FA Cup Final as well as seventeen international matches,[4] including a game betweenAustria andEgypt in thefootball tournament at the1936 Summer Olympics inBerlin.[5]
During the Second World War, he served as anRAF Physical Fitness Officer.[6]
He became a television commentator for theBBC in 1947 and commentated during the1948 Summer Olympics as well as fiveFA Cup Finals before his sudden death in 1952.[7][2]
