Jill SlayAM is aBritish-Australianengineer andcomputer scientist. Her work has attracted international attention and she was made a Member of theOrder of Australia for "service to theinformation technology industry through contributions in the areas offorensic computer science,security,critical infrastructure protection, andcyberterrorism."[1]
Slay completed a B.Sc. degree with honours inmechanical engineering from theUniversity of Hertfordshire inHatfield,Hertfordshire, England, in 1975. After working as a professional engineer she returned to university to undergo aDoctor of Philosophy inscience education, at Curtin University: Perth, WA, AU, which she completed in 2000.[2]
Upon receiving her Ph.D. Slay began her academic career as aninformation security researcher at theUniversity of South Australia. During this time she was approached bySouth Australia Police to assist with cases involving computer devices.[3] After 12 years at theUniversity of South Australia, Slay moved toNamibia where she served as the Dean of IT at thePolytechnic of Namibia (now known as Namibia University of Science and Technology).[3] Slay returned toAustralia in 2014 where she was the Founding Chair and Director of theAustralian Cyber Security Centre as a professor at theAustralian Defence Force Academy through theUniversity of New South Wales inCanberra.[4]
Slay was made aMember of the Order of Australia (AM) in the2011 Australia Day Honours.[5] She is a Fellow of theInternational Information Systems Security Certification Consortium and also a Fellow of theAustralian Computer Society.[6] In 2015 Slay was awarded the Australian Information Security Association InfoSec Educator of the Year.[7]
