The town is famous for a type of softnougat, known inValencian asTorró de Xixona and inSpanish asTurrón de Jijona. This is mostly due to the extensivealmond farming that has existed since theMoorish farmers originally cultivated the almond trees following theIslamic conquest of theIberian Peninsula. Several factories produce nougat, which is all distributed for sale in December, although now they are trying to expand it during the other months.
This nougat is protected by European Union, through the IGP (Indicación Geográfica Protegida).[1]
