Jesús Gámez Duarte (Spanish pronunciation:[xeˈsusˈɣameθˈðwaɾte];[a] born 10 April 1985) is a Spanish former professionalfootballer who played mainly as aright-back.
He spent most of his career withMálaga, making his debut with the first team in 2005 and going on to make 293 official appearances.[3] He also played two seasons in England withNewcastle United.
Born inFuengirola,Málaga,Andalusia, Gámez first appeared professionally withMálaga CF'sB side in2003–04'sSegunda División, and helped them to retain their status three seasons. However, midway through2005–06, he was promoted to the first team, making hisLa Liga debut on 27 November 2005 (five minutes played in a 3–2 away loss toGetafe CF)[4] as both the first and the second teams from the city eventually dropped down a level in June.
Gámez was an undisputed starter the next second-tier seasons, replacingGerardo as and contributing 35 games in2007–08 as the club returned to the top flight after a two-year absence. He continued to be first choice throughoutthe following campaign, appearing in roughly the same matches and minutes.[5]
Gámez was madecaptain in summer 2011, after the retirement of veteranFrancesc Arnau.[6] He made his 200th league appearance on 29 January 2012, featuring one minute in alocal derby againstSevilla FC (2–1 home win);[7]that same season, he helped theBoquerones to their highest ever league finish, a fourth place with thesubsequent spot in the playoff-round of theUEFA Champions League.[8]
On 15 May 2012, Gámez extended his contract with Málaga until June 2016.[9] On 21 October of the following year, he added one more year to his link.[10]
On 8 August 2014, Gámez signed a three-year deal withreigning championsAtlético Madrid.[11] For most of hisfirst season, he was used by managerDiego Simeone as a left-back.[12][13]
During the2016 summer transfer window, the 31-year-old Gámez moved abroad for the first time in his career and joinedChampionship clubNewcastle United on a two-year deal.[14] He made his competitive debut on 23 August, starting in a2–0 home win againstCheltenham Town in theEFL Cup.[15] His maiden league appearance took place four days later, as he came on as a 72nd-minutesubstitute forVurnon Anita againstBrighton & Hove Albion, also a 2–0 home victory.[16]
With the team back in thePremier League, Gámez made his debut in the competition on 10 September 2017 at the age of 32 years and 152 days, playing the entire 1–0 victory atSwansea City.[17] He leftSt James' Park in June 2018, with only ten competitive appearances to his credit.[18]
