James "Jerry" Dawson (30 October 1909 – 19 January 1977) was a Scottishfootballer who played as agoalkeeper and spent most of his career withRangers.
Born inFalkirk, Dawson's position as agoalkeeper saw him nicknamed 'Jerry' after thefamous English custodian with whom he shared a surname.[2] He began his career playing with localJunior sideCamelon, before turning professional with Rangers in November 1929.[2] He spent the next 16 years with theIbrox side, winning theScottish league five times and theScottish Cup twice. He made 236 league appearances for Rangers and wascapped 14 times byScotland between 1934 and 1939. He also appeared 11 times for theScottish Football League XI.[3]
Dawson moved to home-town clubFalkirk in 1945 and retired at the end of the1948–49 season. After a spell as ajournalist with theDaily Record, he moved into coaching when appointedEast Fife's manager in July 1953.[2] He guided his new side to theLeague Cup within months of his appointment but eventually left theFifers in July 1958, after they suffered relegation to Division Two.
Dawson's contribution to Scottish football has been recognised by former club Rangers and he was posthumously elected to theirHall of Fame.[4] He was nicknamed "The Prince in the Yellow Jersey" (this was the colour traditionally worn by the club's goalkeepers).
