Jerome Patrick Flynn (born 16 March 1963) is an English actor and singer. He is best known for his role asBronn in theHBO fantasy seriesGame of Thrones (2011–19). His other roles include Boris Oliver inL2: Empuraan , Paddy Garvey of theKing's Fusiliers in theITV seriesSoldier Soldier (1991–95), Bennet Drake in theBBC mystery seriesRipper Street (2012–16), Hector in theBlack Mirror episodeShut Up and Dance (2016), and Banner Creighton in theParamount+ western series1923 (2022–present).
He and hisSoldier Soldier co-starRobson Green also performed asRobson & Jerome in the latter half of the 1990s. They released a version of "Unchained Melody", which stayed at number 1 for 7 weeks on theUK Chart, selling more than a million copies and becoming thebest-selling single of 1995. The duo had two further number 1 singles: "I Believe" and "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted". Their eponymousdebut album and the follow-upTake Two reached number 1 on theUK Albums Chart.
Flynn was born on 16 March 1963,[1] inBromley,Kent,[1] (now part ofGreater London), The son of actor and singerEric Flynn, who was born onHainan Island in China, and drama teacher Fern Flynn.[2] He has a brother, actorDaniel Flynn, a sister; and a half-sister and a half-brother, musician and actorJohnny Flynn, from his father's second marriage.[2][3]
In 1986, Flynn appeared in theLWT television filmLondon's Burning as firefighter Kenny "Rambo" Baines.[4] When the film spawneda series of the same name in 1988, he was unable to reprise his role due to previous commitments. Also in 1986, he played a minor role as the soldier "Franny" in "The Monocled Mutineer". In 1988 he played the character Freddie in the ITV drama;The Fear,[1] which was about the London underworld. He appeared as D.S Eddie Hargreaves for six episodes of theBritish Academy Television Award (BAFTA) winning police drama,Between The Lines between 1992 and 1994.[citation needed]
Flynn portrayed Corporal Paddy Garvey of theKing's Fusiliers, alongsideRobson Green in theITV seriesSoldier Soldier.[4] After Flynn and Green performedUnchained Melody on the programme,ITV was inundated by people looking to buy the song, and the pair were persuaded by record producerSimon Cowell to record it and release it as a single, a double A-side withWhite Cliffs of Dover.[5] The single was released under the name Robson & Jerome and reached number one in the UK chart in 1995.[5] It stayed at No.1 for 7 weeks in theUK Singles Chart,[5] selling more than 1.9 million copies, and making it thebest-selling single of the year,[5] and winning the duo theMusic Week Awards in 1996 for best single and best album. The duo had two more number one hits in 1995 and 1996 with "I Believe" and "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" both re-makes of standards, they also produced two number one albums.[5]
In 1997, he starred as Eddie Wallis, alongside singing partnerRobson Green, in the comedy-dramaAin't Misbehavin.[4] In 1999, Flynn starred in the short-lived police showBadger, played real-life footballerBobby Charlton in the filmBest,[4] playedTommy Cooper inJus' Like That, a tribute to the late comic, written byJohn Fisher and directed bySimon Callow.[6]
In 2007, Flynn having semi-retired from acting and moved toPembrokeshire,[7] directed and starred in the low budget filmRude Tales. The film was split into a series of short stories centred in the lead character, Jerome Rude, played by Flynn. In July 2010, after almost 10 years away from acting,[7] it was confirmed that Flynn would be playing the role ofBronn in theHBO television seriesGame of Thrones.[7][8] He continued the role for nine years until 2019.[9]
Flynn provides the voice of Daniel (the hound) in the children's television showTommy Zoom. In 2012, Flynn stars alongsideMatthew Macfadyen in four series ofRipper Street for the BBC.[10]
In 2016, Flynn appeared in "Shut Up and Dance", an episode of theanthology seriesBlack Mirror.[11] In 2017, he was the voice of Dr. Gachet in the filmLoving Vincent.[4][1]
In 2019, in an interview, Flynn revealed that he'd been cast inAmazon Prime Video'supcoming series adaptation ofStephen King'sThe Dark Tower series in an unannounced role.[12]
In 2021, Flynn portrayed Neil Wallis specialist in crisis management in the BBC1 television drama filmThe Trick,[1] based on the true story aroundClimategate. In 2022, he starred alongsideHarrison Ford andHelen Mirren, where he played Scottish sheep farmer, Banner Creighton inTaylor Sheridan’s1923 (TV series).[4] In 2025, Flynn portrayed a MI6 officer Boris Oliver in the Indian Malayalam Action drama film calledL2: Empuraan directed byPrithviraj Sukumaran.[13]
Vegetarian since the age of 18,[14] Flynn is a patron of theVegetarian Society andCompassion in World Farming.[15][16] He has joinedPETA in advocating the vegan lifestyle he himself lives by.[17] In December 2018, Flynn joined the board of directors of VeganNation,[18] an Israeli-based vegan lifestyle project that aims to create an ‘international vegan economy based on avirtual currency, the VeganCoin.”[19] Flynn has narrated severalSleep Stories for theCalm App and is an advocate for Meditation and Mindfulness.[20] Flynn acts as patron for the Mindfulness in Schools Project.[20][21]
Having taken childhood holidays inPembrokeshire,Wales with his family, as a then follower ofRatu Bagus, a form of meditation, Flynn and some friends moved to aGeorgian house there in the late 1990s, where he still lived in 2014.[7]
Flynn was in a brief relationship withGame of Thrones co-starLena Headey, which ended in 2014.[22][23]
