Jeremy Gardiner (born 26 April 1957) is a contemporary landscape painter who has been based in theUnited Kingdom and theUnited States. His work has been featured in books.[1][2] It has also been reviewed inThe Boston Globe,[3]Miami Herald,[4]The New York Times,[5][6] and British newspapers includingThe Guardian[7] andThe Observer.[8] He is represented by thePortland Gallery inLondon.[9]

Early life and education

Jeremy Gardiner was born inMünster,Germany.[10] He was educated atNewcastle University, UK (BA Hons inFine Art, 1975–79) and theRoyal College of Art inLondon (MA inPainting, 1980–83), where he was awarded aJohn Minton Scholarship.[11]

Gardiner seeks to capture the environmental processes that shape the surface of the earth and his vision of landscape reflects thegenius loci or sense of place of his subjects.[12] His artworks have been compared with those ofPaul Nash andGraham Sutherland.[13] His paintings are the product of a long engagement with coastal landscapes in Britain.[14] He has continued the approach to landscapes of 20th-centurySt Ives modernist artists such asPeter Lanyon,Ben Nicholson, andJohn Tunnard.[10] Gardiner's landscape subjects have included locations from theJurassic Coast,[15][16] especially inDorset, and the coastline ofCornwall,[17] in southernEngland.

Jeremy Gardiner's workPurbeck Light Years used hybrid techniques combiningcomputer animation, painting and drawing, andimmersive virtual reality.[18] Gardiner also worked on a projectLight Years Coast, a virtual recreation of theJurassic Coast inDorset.[19]

Fellowships, grants, and awards

During 1984-86, Gardiner was a USHarkness Fellow in theMIT Media Lab at theMassachusetts Institute of Technology in theUnited States.[20][21] Also in 1984, he was awarded a UKChurchill Fellowship.[11]

Gardiner was the winner of the 2003 Peterborough Art prize for the workPurbeck Light Years.[11] In 2013, he was awardedThe Discerning Eye ING Art Prize for the workPendeen Lighthouse Cornwall.[22]

In 2017, Gardiner was awarded a Senior Fellowship by the UKHigher Education Academy, in 2020 he was awarded anArts Council England Grant, and in 2022 he was awarded aBritish Council UK-China Connections through Culture Grant.[11]

In 2021, Gardiner's work was included in theChengdu Tianfu Art Museum as part of theChengdu Biennale, China.[26][27]

In parallel with being an artist, Jeremy Gardiner has held academic positions atBirkbeck, University of London, theUniversity of West London,Bath Spa University, theUniversity of Florida,Printmaking at theRoyal College of Art, Department ofDigital Arts at thePratt Institute (New York), theMedia Lab at theMassachusetts Institute of Technology,[20] and a full professor position atRavensbourne University London in east London.[55]
