Frimpong started out playing football at his local clubs, AFC Clayton and Clayton Villa.[4] He caught the eye ofManchester City andLiverpool scouts at a youth tournament, where he was named the best player. Ultimately, he chose to join Manchester City, as they were closer to his hometown.[5]
On 2 September 2019, Frimpong signed a four-year deal withScottish Premiership clubCeltic.[8] Later that month, he made his professional debut againstPartick Thistle in theScottish League Cup quarter-finals.[9] He made an immediate impact, winning the man of the match award on his debut, and going to become a regular in the first team.[10] His speed and skill was highlighted by the media, and made him popular with Celtic fans.[11][12] Frimpong quickly became a fan favourite with his electrifying pace, tenacity, and attacking prowess from the right-back position.[13] On 27 October, he scored in a 4–0 win againstAberdeen,[14] his first professional goal.[15] He won his first career honour on 8 December 2019, when Celtic defeated Rangers 1–0 in theScottish League Cup Final.[16][17] Frimpong was described by Celtic managerNeil Lennon as "outstanding" and "arguably our best [outfield] player in the first half", although he was sent off early in the second half for a foul onAlfredo Morelos in the penalty box.[18] In June 2020, Frimpong was voted Celtic's Young Player of the Year for season 2019–20 by the club's supporters.[19]
On 27 January 2021, Frimpong signed forBundesliga sideBayer Leverkusen for an undisclosed fee, on a four-and-a-half-year deal.[20] On 3 October 2023, he extended his contract until 2028, with a release clause of £35 million.[21] Frimpong was a key figure in helping Leverkusen win their first Bundesliga title, with a 5–0 win overWerder Bremen on 14 April 2024 confirming them as champions and breaking an eleven-year stranglehold on the league byBayern Munich.[22] Frimpong later started in a 2–1 home victory againstAugsburg on 18 May 2024 that sealed an unbeaten season for Leverkusen, the first such season in German top flight history.[23][24]
On 30 May 2025, Frimpong joinedPremier League club Liverpool on a long-term contract worth €35m (£29.5m).[25] He made his debut for the club on 10 August in theFA Community Shield againstCrystal Palace, scoring a lofted chip goal in a 2–2 draw in normal time, with Liverpool eventually losing onpenalties.[26]
In November 2022, Frimpong was included in the final selection of theNetherlands senior national team for the2022 FIFA World Cup.[29] According to an article on theNOS website, although he does not speak Dutch, he understands match talks and football language.[30] He did not appear in the tournament,[31] which saw the Netherlands knocked out byArgentina in the quarter-finals.[32]
On 13 October 2023, Frimpong made his senior debut for the Netherlands, coming on as a substitute in aUEFA Euro 2024 qualifying match againstFrance.[33] On 29 May 2024, he was named in the Dutch squad forUEFA Euro 2024.[34] He scored his first senior international goal in a pre-tournament friendly againstCanada on 6 June.[35]
Born in the Netherlands, Frimpong is of Ghanaian descent.[36][37] His family moved to England when he was seven years old. He was therefore eligible for either theNetherlands,Ghana, andEngland citizenship.[37] Frimpong is a devoutChristian and acknowledged the fact that after theCOVID-19 pandemic he started attendingmass while living inGlasgow.[38]
