Jens-Frederik Nielsen (born 22 June 1991) is a Greenlandic politician and former badminton player who has served as thePrime Minister of Greenland since 2025. He is the leader of theDemokraatit party, and he formerly served as the Minister of Labour and Mineral Resources during theKielsen VII Cabinet of 2020 to 2021. Nielsen is the first member of the Demokraatit party to hold the office of prime minister.[1]
Nielsen was born and raised inGreenland.[2] His father isDanish and moved to Greenland as a child.[3] His hometown isNuuk.[2] He earned a degree in social science from theUniversity of Greenland.[2]
Nielsen has been a member of theGreenland national badminton team since 2009.[4] At the2023 Island Games, Nielsen won gold in men's singles badminton.[4]
In 2020, Nielsen was elected to succeedNiels Thomsen as chair of theDemokraatit party.[5] He was reelected to the role in March 2024.[5]
In May 2020, Nielsen was named the Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources as part of theKielsen VII Cabinet.[6][7]
During the2025 Greenlandic general election, Nielsen received 4,850 personal votes. Nielsen received more votes than incumbent Prime MinisterMúte Bourup Egede, who received 3,276.[8]
In response to theRussian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Nielsen urged Polar Seafood to halt its Russian operations, emphasizing the need to pressure Russia and restore peace in Europe.[9]
In March 2025, Nielsen condemnedU.S. presidentDonald Trump's threats to invade Greenland.[10] Nielsen said Trump will not "get" Greenland.[11] In April 2025, a plan by the United States for undermining the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark through a campaign of foreign interference and disinformation on social media became known.[12]
Nielsen advocates for reducing reliance on Denmark's block grant by prioritizing business development andeconomic self-sufficiency in Greenland.[2]
On 27 August 2025, Nielsen, along with Danish prime ministerMette Frederiksen, issued an official apology on behalf of the Danish and Greenlandic governments for historic abuses against Greenlandic women, including forced contraception.[13]
