Jeffrey Kaplan (March 23, 1954 – March 12, 2025) was an American academic who wrote and edited a number of books onracism,religious violence,terrorism and thefar-right. He was an associate professor of religion at theUniversity of Wisconsin–Oshkosh and a member of the board of academic advisors of the university's Institute for the Study of Religion, Violence and Memory.[1]

Kaplan formerly sat on theeditorial boards of the journalsTerrorism and Political Violence,Nova Religio andThe Pomegranate.[1][2]

Early life and education

Kaplan was born March 23, 1954, inDenver, Colorado, to parents Arthur and Shyrle Gladstone Kaplan. He had one younger brother.[3][4]

He earned anM.A. inLinguistics fromColorado State University in 1981, an M.A. ininternational relations fromThe Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (Tufts University) in 1989, and earned aPh.D. in thehistory of culture from theUniversity of Chicago in 1993.[5][2] Histhesis was titled "Revolutionary Millenarianism in the Modern World: FromChristian Identity toGush Emunim".[6]

Career

Kaplan was an associate professor of history atIḷisaġvik College inUtqiagvik, Alaska.[7]

Kaplan was awarded aGuggenheim Foundation Research Grant for a project on "The Emergence of a Violent Euro-American Radical Right" withLeonard Weinberg.[8] Kaplan occupied the BicentennialFulbright Chair in American Studies at theUniversity of Helsinki inFinland from 1998 to 1999.[9]

Death

Kaplan died on March 12, 2025, inCharlotte, North Carolina, from complications ofleukemia. He was aged 70.[4][10][2]
