Jefferson Scott Shreve (born September 24, 1965) is an American politician and businessman who has served as theU.S. representative fromIndiana's 6th congressional district since 2025. A member of theRepublican Party, he previously served on theIndianapolis City-County Council from 2018 to 2020 and from 2013 to 2016.

Early life and business career

Shreve was born inIndianapolis on September 24, 1965, and raised in theUniversity Heights neighborhood.[1][2] He earned hisBachelor of Arts fromIndiana University, Bloomington, aMaster of Arts in international studies from theUniversity of London, and hisMaster of Business Administration in agribusiness from theKrannert School of Management atPurdue University.[3][4]

Shreve founded Storage Express, which he sold in 2022 toExtra Space Storage for $590 million. He also received a seat on the company'sboard of directors.[2][5][6] His estimated net worth is $599.35 million.[7]

Early political career

Shreve was appointed to theIndianapolis City Council in 2013 after incumbentJeff Cardwell resigned to serve in GovernorMike Pence's administration.[8] He did not run for re-election in2015 and left office in January 2016. He was appointed to the city council again in 2018 when incumbent Jeff Miller resigned after pleading guilty to four felonies.[9][10] Like his first term, he did not run for re-election in2019 and left office in January 2020.

Shreve ran for theIndiana Senate in the 36th district but lost the Republican primary toJack Sandlin by 2.6%.[11] He unsuccessfully ran forIndiana University trustee in 2018.[12]

Shreve considers himself amoderate Republican.[13]

Campaign for Mayor of Indianapolis

Shreve ran formayor of Indianapolis in2023 and lost to incumbentJoe Hogsett by 31,097 votes.[14] During his mayoral campaign, Shreve called for banning assault weapon sales, repealing permitless carry in Indiana, and raising the legal age to purchase a gun from 18 to 21.[15] His stance led him to get an F rating from theNRA Political Victory Fund.[16][17]

Shreve announced he would run for Congress inIndiana's 6th congressional district in2024 after incumbent U.S. RepresentativeGreg Pence announced his retirement.[18] The district had been pushed to the north and absorbed much of southern Indianapolis, including Shreve's home.

He won the primary in May 2024, defeating a field of Republican candidates that includedMike Speedy,Jeff Raatz,Bill Frazier, andJohn Jacob.[19][20] He won the general election with 63.9% of the vote.[21][22]

Tenure

Shreve was sworn in as a member of Congress on January 3, 2025. He voted forMike Johnson in the2025 United States Speaker of the House election on January 3, 2025. Shreve is sponsoring the Build the Wall Act of 2025 resolution and an effort to amend theFAST Act.[23]
