Jayaram Subramaniam, (born 10 December 1965), is an Indian actor who works predominantly inMalayalam cinema, in addition toTamil,Telugu,Kannada,Hindi andSanskrit films. He is also achenda percussionist,mimicry artist, and occasionalplayback singer. Jayaram has acted in more than 200 films and received several awards, including thePadma Shri, twoKerala State Film Awards, twoKerala Film Critics Association Awards, oneTamil Nadu State Film Awards, oneSouth Indian International Movie Awards, fourFilmfare Awards South and sevenAsianet Film Awards.[2][3]

Jayaram started as a mimicry artist at theKalabhavan Institute during the 1980s. He made his acting debut in a leading role inPadmarajan's 1988 filmAparan.[4] He established himself as a successful leading actor in the 1990s by starring in family dramas and comedies—such asPeruvannapurathe Visheshangal (1989),Shubhayathra (1990),Sandhesam (1991),Georgootty C/O Georgootty (1991),Malootty (1992),Ayalathe Adheham (1992),Meleparambil Aanveedu (1993),CID Unnikrishnan B.A., B.Ed. (1994),Puthukkottayile Puthumanavalan (1995),Aniyan Bava Chetan Bava (1995),Thooval Kottaram (1996),Krishnagudiyil Oru Pranayakalathu (1997),Summer in Bethlehem (1998),Veendum Chila Veettukaryangal (1999),One Man Show (2001), andManassinakkare (2003).

The 2000 Tamil filmThenali won him twoTamil Nadu State Film Awards.[5] Jayaram won his first Kerala State Film Award, theSpecial Jury Award for his performance inThooval Kottaram (1996). He won theKerala State Film Award for Second Best Actor for his performance inSwayamvara Panthal (2000). Jayaram won theFilmfare Award for Best Actor three times, for his performances inThooval Kottaram (1996),Theerthadanam (2001), andManassinakkare (2003). In 2011, theGovernment of India honoured him withPadma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in the country for his contributions to the Indian film industry.[4][6]

Early life

Jayaram Subramaniam was born on 10 December 1965 as the second among three children of late Subramaniyam and late Thankam atPerumbavoor,Kerala. His father was fromPalakkad,Kerala. He had an elder brother named Venkataram, who died at a young age, and a younger sister named Manjula. He completed his primary education from Government Boys High School, Perumbavoor. He graduated with abachelor's degree fromSree Sankara College,Kalady and learntChenda under the guidance of guru Pallassana Nandakumar.[7] He became a medical representative soon after college and later joined theKalabhavan Institute where he learned and performed mimicry on a number of stages, which paved his way to the acting career in films.[8] Malayalam writerMalayattoor Ramakrishnan is Jayaram's maternal uncle.[9]

Career

After college, he joined Kalabhavan, a professional mimicry troupe inKochi. At the age of 22, he was introduced to the cinema byscript writer and filmmakerPadmarajan[10] who gave Jayaram a launch pad with the 1988 filmAparan. Jayaram subsequently acted in Padmarajan'sMoonnam Pakkam (1988) andInnale (1989). Padmarajan became hismentor in his film career until the former's death in January 1991.[4] He became one of the Superstars of the Malayalam film industry through the filmMeleparambil Aanveedu (1993) which was directed by Rajasenan. The film was a commercial success and ran for over 200 days in theatres. His on-screen chemistry withShobana worked well in the filmsInnale,Meleparambil Aanveedu andDhwani.[11][12][13]

He is noted for appearing inKamal's films during the late 1980s and early 1990s, in films such asPradeshika Varthakal (1989),Peruvannapurathe Visheshangal (1989) andShubha Yathra (1990) (all of which scripted byRanjith), where he co-starred with his wifeParvathy. He later did a film scripted by Ranjith with the story byJagathy Sreekumar and directed byViji Thampi namedWitness (1988). He teamed up with Viji Thampi and Ranjith inNanma Niranjavan Srinivasan (1990), where he played a police constable who is in search of a criminal played byMukesh. During the early '90s he acted inBharathan'sKeli (1991) andMalootty (1992).

He has acted in several ofSathyan Anthikkad's films. Their first film wasPonmuttayidunna Tharavu (1988). Around that time, Jayaram played asupporting role in Sathyan Anthikkad'sArtham (1989).Thalayanamanthram (1990) andSandesham (1991), were both written and co-starredSreenivasan. Anthikkad and Jayaram later went on to makeThooval Kottaram (1996),[14] which was a commercial success,[15][16] continued their success in films -Irattakuttikalude Achan (1997),Veendum Chila Veettukaryangal (1999),Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal (2000),Yathrakarude Sradhakku (2002),Manassinakkare (2003),Bhagya Devatha andKadha Thudarunnu.

He regularly ensured K.P.A.C Lalitha, Unnikrishnan and Jagathy Sreekumar were cast in his films.

He acted in a leading role along withMammootty andSuresh Gopi inJoshi'sDhruvam (1993). Other films with Gopi include Viji Thampi'sNagarangalil Chennu Raparkam (1990),Thooval Sparsam (1990),Jayaraj'sPaithrukam (1993), andSibi Malayil'sSummer in Bethlehem (1998). He co-starred withMohanlal inBharath Gopi'sUlsavapittennu,Peruvannapurathe Visheshangal (1989) andPriyadarshan'sAdvaitham (1991).

His association with director Rajasenan created many movies such asKadinjool Kalyanam (1991),Ayalathe Addeham (1992),Meleparambil Aanveedu (1993),CID Unnikrishnan B.A., B.Ed. (1994),Aniyan Bava Chetan Bava (1995),Aadyathe Kanmani (1995),Swapna Lokathe Balabhaskaran (1996), andKadhanayakan (1997). He also played Aravindan inSiddique'sFriends (1999) in which he co-starred withSreenivasan andMukesh was the highest grossing Malayalam movie of 1999 and collected11 crore.[17] In the first decade of the 21st century his commercial successful films includeKochu Kochu Santhoshangal (2000),Yathrakarude Sradhakku (2002),Ente Veedu Appuvinteyum (2003),Manassinakkare (2003),Veruthe Oru Bharya (2008). His critically acclaimed roles include Karunakaran in B. Kannan'sTheerthadanam (2001) and Lonappan in Rajeev Kumar'sSesham (2002).

He also forayed intoTamil cinema including roles inGokulam,Purushalakshanam,Priyanka,Kolangal,Murai Mamman andPathini. He played the roles of Dr Kailash and Ayyappan Nair in the Kamal Haasan-starredThenali andPanchathanthiram. They first came together on-screen inChanakyan (1989). Recently he has done more supporting roles in Tamil, such asantagonist roles inSaroja andDhaam Dhoom, and a comic role inAegan.

His movies includeManassinakkare (2003),Njaan Salperu Raman Kutty (2004),Finger Print (2005),Alice in Wonderland (2005),Madhuchandralekha (2006),Moonnamathoral (2006), andAnchal Oral Arjunan (2007). In mid-2008, he played Sugunan in Akku Akbar'sVeruthe Oru Bharya (2008) andThuppakki (2012), which established him as one of the leading comedy actors ofMalayalam andTamil films.

In 2008, he made a comeback after a series of commercial flops with the filmVeruthe Oru Bharya (2008), which was both a critical and commercial success at the box office and ran for over 100 days in theatres.[18][19][20][21][22]

In 2009, he performed in Sathyan Anthikkad'sBhagyadevatha, a commercial success[23][24][16][25] and in 2010 his first film wasHappy Husbands, commercial success with 150 days theatrical run,[26][27][28][29][30] and next he again joined with Sathyan Anthikkadu forKadha Thudarunnu. In 2011, he was featured in commercially successful films likeMakeup Man, along with comedic roles inSeniors andChinatown and alsoSwapna Sanchari.[31] He then acted in films such asAadupuliyattam (2016) andPattabhiraman (2019). He played an important role Azhwarkkadiyan Nambi alias Thirumala inMani Ratnam historical action adventurePonniyin Selvan: I(2022) andPonniyin Selvan: II (2023).[32] In the beginning of 2024 Jayaram had made an official comeback to Malayalam Cinema as hero in Abraham Ozler directed by Midhun Manuel Thomas. The movie is about a Veteran cop Abraham Ozler begins to investigate a mysterious unsolved case and the hunt for a serial killer begins. The movie also stars Mammootty in an extended cameo role. Abraham Ozler received mixed reviews from critics and the film made a total collection of ₹40.05 crore from the worldwide box office in first 30 days of its release and also emerged as the all-time highest grossing solo film in the career of its leading man Jayaram within its lifetime run at the theatres. The end of the film hints a sequal and Jayaram after the success of the film confirmed Abraham Ozler 2.

Personal life

Jayaram married actressParvathy on 7 September 1992.[33] The couple has a son namedKalidas Jayaram who is an actor as well as the winner of theNational Film Award for Best Child Artist in 2003 for his second movieEnte Veedu Appuvinteyum[34] and a daughter Malavika.[1] Currently, the family resides atValasaravakkam,Chennai,Tamil Nadu.[35] Jayaram is a trainedChenda artist. He has enthralled audience through his chenda performances at various temple festivals.[36]
