Javier Cercas Mena (born 1962) is a Spanish writer and professor ofSpanish literature at theUniversity of Girona, Spain. Awards he has won for his novels include theIndependent Foreign Fiction Prize forSoldiers of Salamis (translated byAnne McLean), and theEuropean Book Prize forThe Impostor (translated byFrank Wynne).

Biography

Javier Cercas was born inIbahernando,Cáceres, Spain.[1][2] He is a frequent contributor to theCatalan edition ofEl País and the Sunday supplement. He worked for two years at theUniversity of Illinois Urbana-Champaign inIllinois, United States.[3]

He is part of a group of well-known Spanish novelists who have published "historical memory" fiction, focusing on theSpanish Civil War andFrancoist state, includingJulio Llamazares,Andrés Trapiello, andJesús Ferrero.[4]

Soldiers of Salamis (translated byAnne McLean) won theIndependent Foreign Fiction Prize in 2004.[5] McLean's translations of his novelsThe Speed of Light andOutlaws were also shortlisted for theInternational Dublin Literary Award, in 2008 and 2016 respectively.

During the 2014–15academic year, he was the Weidenfeld Visiting Professor of European Comparative Literature atSt Anne's College atOxford, England.[6] He was awarded the 2016European Book Prize forThe Impostor.
