Jason Zengerle

Jason Gray Zengerle is a political reporter. Since December 2025, he is a staff writer at theThe New Yorker.[1] According toPolitico writerHadas Gold, Zengerle is "known for his deep dives into political themes".[2]

Early life and education

Zengerle attendedLandon School, a private all-boys preparatory school inBethesda, Maryland, graduating in 1992.[3] He then studied atSwarthmore College, graduating in 1996.[4] He has subsequently been a member of the Swarthmore Alumni Council.[5][6]

Career

Early in his career, he was a writing fellow at theAmerican Prospect.[7] His 2007 article "The Accidental Populist", originally published inThe New Republic was anthologized inBest American Political Writing 2007.[8][9] A 2012 profile ofPeter Beinart for theNew York magazine following the publication of Beinart's book,The Crisis of Zionism, received praise from Ira Glunts inMondoweiss andMarc Tracy inTablet.[10][11][12] Beginning in 2013, Zengerle was a staff writer atPolitico and aGQ contributor.[13][14]

Zengerle was hired as a senior editor at theThe New Republic byFranklin Foer, the magazine's editor, in early 2014,[15] but left the magazine in December 2014 as part of a wider exodus when ownerChris Hughes took closer control and appointed Gabriel Snyder as editor.[14] In 2015, he became political correspondent atGQ.[14] At the same time, he became a contributing editor forNew York Magazine.[14] In 2016, he leftNew York Magazine to become a contributing writer atThe New York Times Magazine, while continuing atGQ.[2]

Zengerle received the 2019Toner Prize for Excellence in Political Reporting from theNewhouse School atSyracuse University.[16][17] In 2023, Zengerle was a national fellow at think tankNew America.[18][19] Since December 2025, he has been a staff writer atThe New Yorker.[1] In 2026, he published a biography ofTucker Carlson,Hated By All the Right People.[20][21] Zengerle's book was written without Carlson's cooperation.[22] TheNew York Times called the book "breezy, entertaining and ultimately disquieting".[23]

Personal life

Zengerle is married and lives with his wife, a physician and fellow Swarthmore graduate, and two children inChapel Hill, North Carolina.[3][6]
